Former Belhaven Football star Johnnie Horne is set to be inducted in the Belhaven Athletics Hall of Fame this October as a part of the class of 2022. Horne, a standout running back for the Blazers, played for Belhaven in 1998 and 1999, the first two years of the program's existence and is recognized as one of the most influential players to wear the green and gold.
Horne is among the leaders in multiple career rushing records and is still the record-holder in a pair of categories 25 years on from his first season with the Blazers. Horne still reigns as the program leader in career 100+ yard rushing games with 14 across just 21 career games. Horne also holds the first and third spots in single-season rushing yards with 1,140 in 1999 and 1,022 in 1998 (the first 1,000 yard season in program history).
Those two years are the only time a player has had back to back 1,000 rushing yard seasons in program history and combined to make Horne the all-time career rushing yards leader at 2,162 until his record was broken byÂ
Bradley Foley in 2021. Foley, who played for the Blazers from 2017-2021, now holds the record with 3,216 and Horne sits second. Among his other career numbers, Horne also sits 5th in career rushing touchdowns with 14 during his playing career.
Because of his outstanding performances on the field, Horne received multiple recognitions and honors during his playing career and after. Horne was named to the Mid-South Conference First Team Offense in 1998 after leading the Blazers in rushing. He was also named to Belhaven Football's 25 Year Team earlier this fall recognizing players across the 25 years of Blazers' Football.
