Jackson, MS-Loyola University knocked down 53.1 percent of their shots against the Belhaven men's basketball team Saturday night in route to a 73-67 victory over the Blazers on Senior Night in Rugg Arena. Belhaven's record falls to 16-11 overall and 8-8 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. The Wolfpack goes to 17-10 overall and they now stand at 17-10 in league play.
The Blazers led for almost the entire first half trailing only twice during the first 20 minutes of the game. Belhaven scored their first basket 20 seconds in on a put back by
Korey Whiting off a missed field goal by Nathaniel Roche'. Sean Bennett gave the Wolfpack a brief lead on a two point basket with 18:06 to go in the half.
Belhaven built a six points lead with at 17-11 with 11:27 left in the opening 20 minutes of the first half on a bucket by
Krayleon Winston. Loyola cut the lead to two points with a mini 4-0 run before Belhaven was able to extend it back out to six points at 25-19 on a Roche' free throw with 5:59 on the first half clock. The Blazers had six point leads five different times in the first half. Belhaven ended up taking a four point 36-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Loyola came out in the second half and outscored the Blazers by 10 points to lock up the six point win. The Wolfpack continued to keep it close as both teams exchanged baskets throughout the early part of the second half. The Blazers fell behind late in the game and couldn't muster enough offense to overtake the Wolfpack down the stretch. The Blazers fired some late three's but could only get two out of nine trey's to fall in the second half. Loyola went on to pick up the 73-67 victory.
Belhaven was led on offense by
Iman Walcott who recorded his second consecutive double double and third on the season with a team high 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Korey Whiting had 16 points followed by
Nathaniel Roche' with 11 points. Whiting and
Detrick Johnson each led the team with four assists on the night.
As a team, the Blazers shot 41.7 percent from the field and 25 percent from three point land. Belhaven had the rebounding edge at 32-27 and each team had 15 turnovers in the game. Loyola was led by Ryan Brock with 26 points Terry Beaulieu had 10 points in the Wolfpack victory.
Belhaven honored the senior players before Saturday's game which proved to be a bitter sweet night. The Blazers had five seniors playing in their next to last home game in Rugg Arena.

The Blazers will play their final regular season home game on Thursday night in Rugg Arena as LSU-Shreveport will be in town to face Belhaven. The tip off is slated for 7:30 PM.
