Blazers Track & Field Competes at Belhaven Midweek Open

tJACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's and Women's Track & Field teams continued their strong start to the outdoor season with another solid showing at home, hosting their second meet of the year and third overall competition of the 2026 campaign.

MEN'S RECAP
Belhaven's sprint group once again led the way, highlighted by a strong finish from Julius Phillips in the 400 meters. Phillips placed second overall with a time of 50.93 seconds. In the same event, Jacob Turner recorded a time of 54.74 seconds while Donovan Hurst followed at 57.07.

The Blazers also saw success in the 800 meters, where Peyton Vandevuss turned in a second-place finish with a time of 2:23.36. In the 1500 meters, Drew Duckworth claimed an event victory, crossing in 4:50.66 to lead Belhaven's distance group.

On the hurdles side, Damian Sidelien bounced back in a big way after his previous outing, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 17.05.

Belhaven controlled the 100 meter-dash with four top-five finishes. Kenneth Mills led the group with a first-place finish in 11.05, followed by Leeson Taylor in second (11.37). Seth Haynes (11.64) and Jaheem Cook (11.78) also placed inside the top five. Taylor added another strong performance in the 200-meters, placing second with a time of 22.96 seconds, while Alex Reed followed in third at 23.15. Haynes (23.91) and Cook (24.17) rounded out the group.

In the field events, Neal Terry delivered one of the top performances of the day, winning the long jump with a mark of 7.14 meters and later claiming the triple jump title with a 14.86-meter effort. Reed added a second-place finish in the long jump at 6.86 meters, showing improvement from earlier meets. Mills also picked up another first place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters.

WOMEN'S RECAP
On the women's side, Belhaven continued to show improvements across numerous track and field events.

Yasmyne McCann highlighted the sprint group with a first-place finish in the 100 meters, clocking a time of 12.77 seconds. She also added a runner-up finish in the 200 meters with a time of 27.90 and a second-place finish in the long jump at 4.85 meters. Kimona Haynes continued her strong season with a win in the 200 meters (25.32) and another victory in the 400 meters, finishingin 55.21. Her times in both races remains among the top marks in program history and continues her consistent early-season form in short distance races.

In the hurdles, Brycelyn Townsend turned in a steady performance, winning both the 100-meter hurdles (16.92) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:14.28).

The distance group saw continued progress as Jocelyn Belonga placed second in the 1500 meters with a time of 6:03.84, improving from her previous performances this season. Destiny Griffin also showed improvement in the 800 meters, cutting time from 3:23.31 in the previous meet down to 3:18.19.

The Blazers have short rest, heading to Hattiesburg to compete in the Southern Miss Invitational on Friday.
