CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Belhaven wrapped up its final tune-up before the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships with several strong performances Saturday at the Lee University Last Chance Meet.
Competing against a field loaded with NCAA Division I, II, NAIA and unattached athletes, the Blazers picked up multiple top-five finishes while continuing to sharpen things up ahead of the national meet later this month in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Neal Terry once again led the way on the men's side. The senior finished first in the long jump with a mark of 7.16m (23'6"), topping a field that included regional and nationally-ranked competitors. Terry followed that with a runner-up finish in the triple jump at 14.53m (47'8"), continuing a strong postseason stretch after breaking the CCS record in the event at the conference championships last month.
Alex Reed added another solid performance in the long jump, placing fifth overall with a leap of 6.81m (22'4.25").
In the high jump, freshman
Kenneth Mills cleared 2.00m (6'6.75") to finish fourth in a tightly contested field. Mills matched the height of the second and third-place finishers and continued his impressive rookie campaign heading into nationals season.
On the women's side,
Kimona Haynes competed in both the 200m and 400m against one of the strongest sprint fields Belhaven has faced this season. Haynes placed 10th in the 200m with a time of 24.54, competing in a race filled with nationally-ranked NCAA Division II and NAIA sprinters. Her mark remains among the top Division III times in the country this season.
Later in the day, the senior finished seventh in the 400m in 56.21 against another deep field that included multiple nationally-ranked athletes from the Division II level.
Saturday marked the final competition for the Blazers before turning their attention toward the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for May 21-23 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
