Church's Second-Round 69 Leads Belhaven at West Pines Collegiate

DOUGLASVILLE, GA. - Freshman Parker Church carded a 2-under-par 69 during Monday's second round and tied for 34th individually to lead the Belhaven Men's Golf team at the West Pines Collegiate at West Pines Golf Club in Douglasville, Ga.

The Blazers finished 17th in the 24-team field with a 54-hole total of 893 (+41). Belhaven opened Monday's 36-hole slate with rounds of 292 (+8) and 297 (+13) before closing with a 304 (+20) on Tuesday.

Oglethorpe captured the team championship at 835 (-17), followed by Shenandoah at 847 (-5) and Hampden-Sydney at 851 (-1). Belhaven finished five strokes ahead of Mississippi University for Women and eight behind Drew University.

Church's second-round 69 was the 13th-best score among the 127 golfers in the round. The Covington, Louisiana, native recorded four birdies against just two bogeys, including three birdies over his final 13 holes.

Church followed rounds of 75 and 69 with a 74 on Tuesday to finish at 218 (+5), matching the fourth-lowest 54-hole total by a Blazer. He completed the tournament without a double bogey and tied for 12th in the field with 37 pars.

Junior Drew Groscost placed tied for 53rd after rounds of 71, 74 and 76 gave him a total of 221 (+8). Groscost tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring, playing those holes at 7-under with a 4.42 scoring average. He also led Belhaven with nine birdies.

Whitt Welch opened with a 73 and finished tied for 105th at 233 (+20) following rounds of 77 and 83. Levi Turner posted rounds of 73, 81 and 80 to tie for 110th at 234 (+21).

John McIntosh completed the Belhaven lineup at 236 (+23), placing tied for 116th. McIntosh improved in each round, following an opening 85 with a 77 and a team-low-tying 74 on Tuesday.

Scoring conditions were most difficult during the final round, when the par-71, 6,832-yard course produced a field average of 75.98. That was 2.64 strokes higher than Monday afternoon's second-round average of 73.34.

Belhaven returns to competition Oct. 26-27 at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational in Rome, Georgia.
