JACKSON, Miss. - As 2023 draws to a close, Belhaven Athletics is proud to recount some of the many moments displayed by Blazers student-athletes and teams that made this calendar year one to remember. Over the remainder of the year, multiple moments will be recounted, featuring each of Belhaven's athletics programs.
TOP MOMENTS OF 2023: WOMEN'S SOCCER CRUISES THROUGH CCS QUARTERFINALS IN HISTORIC WIN
The 2023 season was a historic one for the Belhaven Women's Soccer team who continued to solidify their spot as one of the top programs in the Collegiate Conference of the South. The Blazers finished the year 13-4-2 overall and 7-1 in conference, earning them the second seed in the CCS Tournament.
That second spot set up a match against Berea in the Quarterfinal round of the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament and would tee up a historic win for the Blazers. Belhaven cruised past Berea 5-0 thanks in large part to a hat trick by
Kyla Shaw inside 20 minutes.
Not only did the win send Belhaven through to the CCS Semifinals, but it secured the 13th win of the season which marked the second-highest win total in program history and the most wins for the program in over 20 years. The year also featured a batch of dominant home performances that included a five-match win streak that spanned the start of September into early October and saw Belhaven outscore their opposition 22-0.
Under Head Coach Kimberly Harrell, the Blazers have now crossed the double-digit win threshold three times in five full seasons (excluding Spring 2021 where fewer than 10 matches were played) and consistently held high seeds in conference tournaments.
The 2024 campaign promises to be yet another exciting one for the Blazers who will likely be among the favorites to top the Collegiate Conference of the South. They will make a strong chase for the program's first conference championship since they won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (NAIA) in 2004.
Come back later today for more top moments from 2023.
