Alumni Spotlight: Emily Easterling

What are you currently doing professionally, and how did your time at Belhaven help prepare you for it?

"I'm currently a registered nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Children's of Mississippi. My time at Belhaven helped prepare me for my professional career in several ways. Playing soccer and going through the nursing program taught me how important teamwork really is. In the NICU, I'm part of an interdisciplinary team working together to give our tiniest patients the best care possible. It also taught me attention to detail, discipline, and how to stay focused in high-stress environments, which are all things that translate directly into NICU nursing."

Why did you choose Belhaven?

"I chose Belhaven because of the balance it had to offer. I was able to pursue my goal of playing soccer at a competitive collegiate level while also going through nursing school. On top of that, Belhaven provided a strong sense of community where I could build meaningful friendships and continue growing in my relationship with Christ. It really gave me the opportunity to grow academically, athletically, socially, and spiritually all in one place."

What is your favorite memory from your time as a Blazer?

"It's hard to pick just one. A few significant moments stand out like celebrating big home wins and making playoff runs. But I also think about the smaller moments like spending time in the student center between classes, running from clinicals at the hospital straight to the field for game-day, or even choosing to spend the weekends off with teammates."

What do you miss the most from your time at Belhaven?

"One thing I miss from my time at Belhaven is getting the chance to compete. I miss the energy of a game-day, competing at practice, and the rush of adrenaline. It was so much fun to get to play the game we all loved everyday and to do it together."

How do you stay involved with the game of soccer today?

"I stay involved with the game today by coming back to the Bowl to support the men's and women's soccer teams with my fiancé and other alumni who have become lifelong friends. I love the reunions that come with returning for alumni games or 7-vs-7 tournaments and getting to see so many familiar faces again."

Who is the best player you played with?

"The best player I played with during my time at Belhaven was Julianne Wilson. She was a phenomenal goalkeeper. Having her behind me gave me the confidence to push forward as a center back and make runs up the field without worrying, because I knew she always had my back."
