Alumni Spotlight: Amanda Wiggins

What are you currently doing professionally, and how did your time at Belhaven help prepare you for it?

"Since graduation, I have been on staff with Athletes in Action where I serve as a chaplain in women's professional soccer (NC Courage) and a writer for The Christian Athlete (thechristianathlete.com). Belhaven gave me the opportunity to grow holistically as a student athlete. God used my experience at Belhaven to shape, mature, and equip me to be in full time ministry. My degree in education helped me become a better teacher and communicator which prepared me for my current ministry role."

Why did you choose Belhaven??

"Transferring from a junior college, I wanted a place where I could have the opportunity to compete at a high level and enjoy the game of soccer while also receiving a well rounded education. The size of Belhaven was also intriguing for me. I was drawn to the smaller classroom size and knew that environment would be a place I could thrive. Belhaven exceeded expectations. I did not only leave with a positive soccer experience. I graduated with wonderful memories, amazing friends, and I still have great relationships with some of my professors."

What is your favorite memory from your time as a Blazer?

"There's not one specific memory that comes to mind but a culmination of many small moments like drinking coffee in the rocking chairs outside the student center, spending time with my teammates on and off the field, the smell of fried chicken that engulfs the whole campus every week, the excitement of Game Days, and of course beating Millsaps."

What do you miss the most from your time at Belhaven??

"I miss the community at Belhaven. Because of the smaller student population, it's easy to cultivate deep relationships with classmates, faculty, and teammates. Being from the Jackson area, I try to make it a point to go back to campus when I'm visiting because Belhaven still feels like home."

How do you stay involved with the game of soccer today?

"My husband and I play indoor soccer in an adult league here in North Carolina. We still love the game of soccer even if we are both a few steps slower than we used to be. Also, serving as a chaplain in women's soccer I get many opportunities to attend games and enjoy the sport."

Who is the best player you played with?

"At Belhaven, that's hard to choose but I can shout out my teammates Ashley Harber and Laura Quintero. They were freshmen when I was a senior. I enjoyed playing with them because of the excellence and skill they brought to the field, but they were also people of great character and lifted up everyone around them."
