Last-Minute Goal Sparks First Conference Victory

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – A day after suffering their first loss of the season, the Belhaven women's soccer team returned to their winning ways on Saturday evening with a thrilling double overtime victory over Southern Wesleyan University (2-5-1, 0-2 SSAC). With the 2-1 win, the Blazers now claim a 7-1 record, including 1-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

"I was glad to see our girls fight throughout the game after the way last night turned out. Yesterday was a wake up call," Head Coach Josue Sabillon said. "I could tell they wanted to win, and this was well-deserved."

The Warriors began the scoring in the 34th minute when Grace Taylor bounced a shot over the head of Blazer goalkeeper Isabelle Granlund. The lone goal for the home team came in the 79th minute, when Ashley Harber found the back of the net for the fourth time this season.

Harber's contributions ended for the duration of regulation, but the Metairie, Louisiana native would later come up with the biggest assist of her career. Five minutes into the second overtime period, Harber connected with freshman Fran Glenny for a sudden victory to pick up the team's first conference win. Glenny's sixth goal of the year came from 16 yards out and is a team high.

"With so little time left, everyone was running on adrenaline. I am really grateful to Ashley for giving me the opportunity," Glenny said. "I was just thinking, "don't miss."

Belhaven outshot Southern Wesleyan by a total of 42 to 8, but it took 15 minutes of overtime for the Blazers to emerge victorious. Warrior goalkeeper Krista Anonie tallied an impressive 16 saves in the match, giving her 72 for the season.

The Blazers aim to carry momentum from their last-second victory into their next match in Gainesville, Georgia next Thursday, when they take on Brenau University. The match is set to begin at 6:00 pm.
