Good Pitches Blazers to Win over AUM

Box Score
COLUMBUS, GA. – Sophomore pitcher Chris Good guided the Belhaven baseball team to a 2-1 win over Auburn University-Montgomery on Wednesday afternoon on the second day of pool play at the Southern States Athletic Conference Championships. Good, a sophomore from Forney, TX, tossed his 10th complete game of the season, limiting the Warhawks to their only run in the sixth inning.

Good earned the win and in the process tied a Belhaven single season school record for most victories in a season with 14. Good is now even with Jon Calhoun who logged 14 wins during the 1991 campaign. Good has only been on the losing side of the score sheet three times in 2013. Good allowed nine hits and four walks, but struck out five during the course of the game.

Wednesday's game turned out to be a classic pitcher's duel between Good and Auburn-Montgomery's Will Ruffin who matched him pitch for pitch. Belhaven (37-20, 1-1) threatened in the first with a pair of two out singles, but left runners on first and third to end the inning. Ruffin locked in from that point until the seventh when the Blazers would strike for their only two runs.

Meanwhile, the Warhawks nearly broke the scoreless tie in the third when they drew a pair of walks to go along with a base hit. Good issued free passes to shortstop Branden Kelly and center fielder Josh Thompson, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Catcher Blake Bearden singled and appeared to have driven in Kelley from second base. However, Thompson was thrown out at third base by center fielder Reagan Rutledge before Kelley crossed the plate, negating the run.

Auburn-Montgomery (32-23-1, 0-2) eventually broke through in the sixth collecting a run on a single to left by left fielder Hayden Hillyer. Good limited the damage to one run despite three Warhawk hits and an error in the inning. Good got right fielder Shane Turner on a called third strike with runners on second and third to end the inning. It would prove to be a big out.

Belhaven finally got the bats going again in the seventh and scored the only two runs they would need. Catcher Kyle Wheeler, who has enjoyed a lot of success over the past two seasons at Golden Park, lined a double into the left field corner and first baseman Bud Britt followed suit with a double of his own to tie the game 1-1. Rutledge then delivered what would be the game winner with a single through the middle, driving in Britt for a 2-1 lead. Good and the Blazers defense did the rest to hold back the Warhawks for the win.

Wheeler led Belhaven at the dish with two hits in three official plate appearances. For the tournament, Wheeler is 5 for 7 with a double. Britt and Rutledge each had hits and an RBI followed by third baseman Jason Hicks, who picked up the other of Belhaven's five hits in the game.

Ruffin pitched well, but suffered the loss dropping his record to 5-6 this season. Ruffin fired eight innings and allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and one strikeout. Second baseman Chad Mansmann led AUM with three hits followed by Bearden with two hits in the contest. The Warhawks end out hit Belhaven 9-5.

Belhaven will wrap up the pool play portion of the tournament on Thursday night against top seed Faulkner University at Golden Park. The Blazers still have a shot to win the pool if Faulkner defeats Southern Poly on Wednesday night, the Blazers win their game against Faulkner, and Auburn-Montgomery defeats Southern Poly on Friday.

Thursday night's first pitch is slated for 6:00 PM CDT.
