Blazers Storm Back for 6-4 Win at Loyola

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Belhaven baseball team rallied for a 6-4 win in game one of a three game Southern States Athletic Conference series at Loyola University Friday night. The Blazers fell behind 4-0 and scored six unanswered runs to take home the win.

Loyola (6-18, 2-8 SSAC) went on the attack first striking for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Wurster started the game for Belhaven (14-11, 2-5 SSAC) and after getting the first out, ran into trouble with the Wolfpack lineup.

Shortstop Brandon Snow doubled to left field and then right fielder Karson Cullins blasted a two run home run over the wall in left to make it a 2-0 game. The onslaught didn't stop there as DH Carmelo LoSauro drew a walk and came home on a two run blast by third baseman Britt Pellegrin. The Blazers brought in Jared Miller from the bullpen to get the final two outs of the first, limiting the Wolfpack to a 4-0 lead.

Belhaven got right to work in the top of the second, scoring two of what would become six unanswered runs. First baseman Bud Britt started the comeback with a double to left followed by a single to right off the bat of second baseman Ryne Cook. Cook moved to second on a ground out by DH Majer Entabi setting the table for right fielder Caleb Baucum's two run single to left, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Belhaven's pitching staff then settled in and gave the bats a chance to keep chipping away at Loyola's lead. Britt brought the Blazers to within a run at 4-3 when he led off the fourth inning with his third home run and 17th run batted in of the season.

Centerfielder Reagan Rutledge kicked off the fifth inning with a bunt single and moved to third when catcher Bradley Brunet's throw to first got away down the right field line. Leftfielder Emilio DeSilva doubled to left chasing home Rutledge for the equalizer.

Belhaven recorded the game winning run in the sixth thanks to a leadoff walk to Britt followed by a sacrifice bunt from Cook that moved him to second. Entabi slammed a double to center advancing Britt to third enabling Baucum to bring home Britt on a sac fly to left field for a 5-4 advantage.

Loyola threatened to pull even in the eighth by getting a runner to third with less than two outs. Snow led the inning off with a single and then stole second base off relief pitcher Austin McCann. Cullins advanced Snow to third on a ground ball to second with only one out. Robert Marzoni came in from the bullpen and closed the door on the Wolfpack inducing a pop out and a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Belhaven tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on a two out single by third baseman Jason Hicks. Hamilton Harper pinch hit for shortstop Josiah Richard to start the inning and drew a walk against relief pitcher Tony Asta. Richard re-entered the game as a pinch runner and scored on the Hicks single after going to second on a sac bunt by Rutledge.

The Blazers had to hold their breath in ninth when the Wolfpack loaded the bases and may a bid for the victory. However, Marzoni buckled down and got Snow to foul out to end the game, securing a much needed win for Belhaven.

Belhaven was led by Baucum who drove in three of the six runs in the game, including the two run single in the second that started the rally. Britt scored three runs and went 2 for 3 at the plate with a home run followed by Cook with three hits and a run scored. Hicks went 2 for 5 at the plate with a double and the single in the ninth.

Left hander Andrew Gunn (2-1) picked up the win in relief, logging two innings of scoreless baseball. He gave up just one hit, did not walk a batter, and struck out three. Marzoni notched his fifth save of the season firing the final 1.2 innings of the contest. Marzoni did not allow a hit or a walk while striking out three. The Blazers used eight pitchers in all to hold the Wolfpack to four runs.

Loyola was led by Snow who went 3 for 5 with a run scored. Cullins and Pellegrin each had two run home runs finishing the night 1 for 4. Asta suffered the loss in relief, allowing two runs on three hits, dropping his record to 0-3.

Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday for the final two games of the series starting at 1:00 PM in New Orleans.
