JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven baseball team ran its record to 3-0 in the 2013 Cowboy Maloney Series on Tuesday night by handing Millsaps a 6-4 defeat at Twenty Field. The Blazers are now 2-0 against the Majors after prevailing 9-6 at Smith-Wills Stadium on February 13th. Belhaven, Millsaps, and Mississippi College play each other three times during the season and the school with the best record in those games is crowned the Maloney Series Champion.
Belhaven (21-12) capitalized on six Millsaps errors to aid in the run production. The Blazers took an early lead in the second when a mishandled ground ball by third baseman Keith Shumaker enabled catcher
Kyle Wheeler to reach base to start the inning. Wheeler went to third on a double by first baseman
Bud Britt and second baseman
Ryne Cook cashed in Wheeler from third on an RBI groundout to short to make it a 1-0 game.
Millsaps (12-6) came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the third and they did it without the aid of a hit.
Jared Miller started the game for the Blazers on the bump and cruised through the first 2.2 innings before he lost command of the strike zone. Miller hit right fielder West Chenoweth with two outs and then walked the next two batters to load the bases.
Drew Broyles came in from the bullpen and walked catcher Wes Perkins to force in a run before getting shortstop Daniel Doucet to fly out to right center to end the inning.
The Blazers went back in front 3-1 with solo runs in the fifth and sixth frames. Left fielder

Jason Hicks ripped back to back two out doubles in the fifth while pinch hitter
Majer Entabi cashed in Cook from third on a sac fly in the sixth.
Leading 3-1, Belhaven let the lead slip away in the bottom of the seventh when the Majors plated three runs to grab a 4-3 edge.
Michael Wurster started the inning on the mound, but could only get one out before giving way to
Robert Marzoni with the bases loaded. Perkins drove in a run on an RBI single to left and Doucet lifted a sac fly to right to tie the game. The Majors then executed a double steal with Shumaker stealing home for the final run. Marzoni got center fielder Isaac Glen to ground out and limit the damage.
The Blazers picked themselves back up in the top of the eighth with the aid of two more Millsaps errors. Right fielder
Emilio DeSilva reached on a fielding error by Kevin Wall at second base and scored on an error by first baseman Andrew Rafferty. Belhaven center fielder
Reagan Rutledge dropped down a sac bunt but was safe when Rafferty lost the ball, allowing DeSilva to score while the inning's second tally came on a double play off the bat of Hicks.
The Blazers added one more insurance run in the ninth when Wheeler doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a failed pickoff attempt that resulted in a throwing error by third baseman Bryce Blackburn.
Josh Rogers came into the close the game on the mound and preserved the 6-4 victory.
Marzoni picked up his first win of the season by logging 1.2 innings in relief as he moves to 1-1. Marzoni allowed two hits, but did not surrender a run. He walked one and struck out two. Rogers was credited with his second save of the 2013 campaign thanks to a scoreless ninth inning that included two strikeouts.
Belhaven outhit Millsaps 6-4 with five of the six hits being doubles for the Blazers. Francia, Hicks, Wheeler, Britt and Cook all had two baggers on Tuesday night. Hicks, Cook and Entabi each had an RBI while Wheeler scored twice in the win. Francia added two more stolen bases and as a team the Blazers swiped five bags.
JC Keane suffered the loss for the Majors allowing two unearned runs in one third of an inning on the hill. He walked one batter and struck out another as he fell to 0-1 on the season. Perkins led the Majors at the plate with a hit and two runs batted in.
Belhaven will return home to host Southern Wesleyan University at Smith-Wills Stadium for game one of a three game Southern States Athletic Conference series Friday Night at 6:00 PM.
