JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team bounced back from a pair of tough losses on Saturday to Bethel University (TN) with a 10-2 win over Tougaloo College Tuesday night at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers got off to a slow start, but scored at least a run in each of the last five innings en route to the win.
Belhaven (5-2) scratched together a run in the bottom of the second when junior
Daniel Gilbert singled with one out to right center and trotted home on a double to left by senior
Jason Hicks. The two bagger by Hicks would be the first of two in the game for the Blazer third baseman.
Tougaloo (0-5) responded in the fourth inning with its first run of the game off relief pitcher
Jared Miller. Austin Guin led the inning off with a base hit and after advancing to second on a ground ball out, moved to third on a wild pitch. That set the table for Donnie Norwood to send him home with a ground out to shortstop.
Belhaven answered back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Emilio DeSilva to make it a 2-1 game. The Bulldogs rallied to knot the game again at 2-2 in the top of the fifth when Corlis Oliver scored on a wild throw by catcher
Kyle Wheeler. Wheeler was attempting to throw out Derell McLemore at second base when the ball got through the infield into center.
The Blazers, after regaining the lead at 3-2 with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by senior
Bud Britt, kicked things into gear in the bottom of the sixth scoring twice against Tougaloo relief pitcher John Alford. Sophomore
Reagan Rutledge collected a sacrifice fly that chased home Hicks followed by an RBI double off the bat of
Majer Entabi making it a 5-2 game.
Belhaven added three more runs in the seventh on a two run double by Hicks and a run scoring single by DeSilva. The Blazers capped the night in the eighth on an RBI double by Entabi and a sac fly by Gilbert. Senior
Robert Marzoni got the final three outs in the ninth to seal the win.
Hicks led all players with three hits and three runs batted in for Belhaven. Hicks now has a team high five doubles on the season. Rutledge, Entabi, Britt, Gilbert and DeSilva all turned in multi-hit games with two apiece. Entabi's two hits were doubles and one of Rutledge's hits went for three bases. Belhaven outhit Tougaloo 15-5.
Andrew Gunn started the game for Belhaven and went the first two innings without giving up a run while striking out two. Miller pitched two innings for the Blazers surrendering one run on one hit. Senior
