JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team finished its three game weekend series against LSU-Alexandria claiming wins in games two and three for the series win Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers lost game one 8-6 in 12 innings followed by 6-3 and 3-1 decisions in the final two games. The series opener from Friday, which was suspended in the 11th inning due to inclement weather, had to be finished prior to Saturday's doubleheader.
Game One
Runs came in bunches in the first four innings of the series opener with the teams combining for 12. LSU-Alexandria (9-6) went to work in the top of the first against Belhaven starter
David Hill and promptly scored two runs. Right fielder Dylan Edmiston collected an RBI single and DH Nick Jones grounded into a double play with the bases loaded that resulted in another run. The double play by the Blazers stalled what could have been a much bigger inning.
Belhaven (10-8) came right back with three runs in the home half of the first against Ryan Waters. Third baseman
Bud Britt got things rolling on an RBI double to left followed by a triple to right field off the bat of catcher
Kyle Wheeler. DH
Caleb Baucum sent the Blazers in front with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 game.
The Generals answered in the top of the second on an RBI ground out by center fielder Randy Frederick knotting the score at 3-3. Belhaven then bounced right back with two runs in the bottom of the second on right fielder
Jason Hicks second home run of the season, clearing the wall in left center.
In the fourth, LSU-Alexandria climbed back in front with three runs on an RBI single by Frederick, a ground ball by first baseman James Sloan brought in another tally, and an RBI base hit by second baseman Jay Bell capped the scoring. The Blazers also committed two costly errors resulting in extra outs and two of the three runs being unearned.
Trailing 6-5, Belhaven loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth on one out singles by second baseman
Ryne Cook and center fielder
Reagan Rutledge followed by a walk to Hicks. Britt chased home Cook on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 6-6.
The bats went silent at that point as neither team could muster a run to end the game in nine innings. It had rained off and on throughout the night, but lighting moved in forcing a rain delay. The two teams then came back out to try and finish after a brief break in the weather; however another storm moved in forcing the game to be stopped with one out in the 11th inning.
When play resumed on Saturday, the Generals recorded the final two outs in the home half of the 11th and then pounded out four hits and two runs in the 12th. Edmiston broke the tie with an RBI double to right center and left fielder Rynn Touchet followed suit with another run scoring double to the gap in left center off
Robert Marzoni. The Blazers didn't have an answer in the bottom of the 12th as LSUA held on for the win.
Rutledge and Cook both had two hits to guide the Blazers at the plate while Hicks and Britt had a hit and two RBI's. Marzoni (0-1) suffered the loss on the hill, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Edmiston had two hits and two runs batted to pace the Generals. Stefan Porche earned the win in relief. He tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
Game Two
Belhaven had to fight back from an early deficit in game one of the double header. The Generals quickly put three runs on the board in the first two innings. Bell had a sac fly to center and third baseman Seth Montz pushed home a run with a groundout. In the second, LSUA picked up a run on a single to right by Frederick.
Belhaven broke an 11 inning scoreless streak in the fourth when left fielder
Majer Entabi laced a two run double to left center that brought the Blazers back to within one at 3-2. Then in the sixth, Belhaven exploded for four runs to jump in front. Right fielder
Emilio DeSilva tied the game on a squeeze bunt, Baucum scored on a wild pitch, and Entabi followed him across the plate when catcher Brandon Samson threw wildly to home. Pinch hitter
Jonathan Thompson brought home the fourth run with a sac fly to center field.
After the shaky start, Belhaven starter
Chris Good settled in and fired a complete game for his fourth win of the season. Good (4-2) allowed three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Hicks and Wheeler had two hits for Belhaven while Enatbi notched two runs batted in.
Corey Thomas (2-1) took the loss LSUA, surrendering four runs on eight hits in five innings of work on the mound. Frederick, Sloan, Jones, and Samson each had two hits for the Generals.
Game Three
Game three of the series proved to be a pitcher's duel with the Blazers emerging on top. Belhaven's
Josh Rogers got the start and pitched four scoreless innings before giving way to
Michael Wurster who kept the shutout rolling.
The Blazers were able to scratch together a run in the fifth on a clutch two out RBI single by Entabi. Wheeler led off the inning with a single and the courtesy runner
Dominick Francia stole second to get in scoring position setting up the run.
Belhaven added what proved to be two key insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a run scoring triple by Britt and a sac fly by Wheeler to make it a 3-0 game.
Austin McCann kept the Generals off the board in the top of the sixth getting Edmiston to pop out to second with the bases loaded.
McCann stayed in the game in the seventh to close it out, but it certainly wasn't a routine inning. LSUA had an RBI single by pinch hitter Justin Crowl that ended the shutout and brought the tying run to the plate. However, McCann was able to hold on for his first save of the season by inducing a ground out to end the game off the bat of first baseman Stefan Porche.
Wurster earned the win in relief for Belhaven improving his record to 2-0 while McCann picked up the save, logging 1.1 innings. Entabi finished the contest 2 for 2 at the plate with one run batted in. Wheeler and Britt had a hit and one RBI apiece.
Frederick picked up two hits for the Generals followed by Jones, Sloan, and Crowe with one each. Touchet (2-1) started the game on the mound and allowed three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings leading to the loss.
Belhaven will be back on the turf at Smith-Wills Stadium Tuesday afternoon when the team hosts Freed-Hardeman at 4:00 PM.
