JACKSON, Miss. – Belhaven pitchers
Chris Good and
Robert Marzoni teamed up for another impressive performance Friday night, shutting out Bethel University (TN) 2-0 in game one of a three games series at Smith-Wills Stadium. The duo limited Blue Mountain to one unearned run in a 4-1 victory last Friday in the season opener. Good was rewarded for his performance with the win while Marzoni notched his second save in as many outings.
Good (2-0) ran into some trouble early in the first inning surrendering a leadoff single to Bethel second baseman Will Erwin to start the game. Catcher Tyler Roberson moved Erwin to second on a sac bunt putting a runner in scoring position with one out. The Wildcats, who were playing their season opener, were hoping an early lead would put the Blazers on their heels.
After getting right fielder Lance Jarreld on a groundout to short, Good walked first baseman Celtic Rush to put runners on first and third with two away. In what was arguably the play of the game, Belhaven second baseman
Ryne Cook made a diving stop on a ball hit up the middle by left fielder Brian Ferrell. Cook quickly got to his feet and flipped the ball to shortstop
Daniel Gilbert for the force play at second to end the inning.
Belhaven (4-0) had its chances to score against Bethel (0-1) starting pitcher Tuner Bush, but a big hit eluded them through the first five innings. The Blazers had a runner at second in each of the first five frames, but Bush found a way to work out of the jam each time. Belhaven finally got to Bush and the Wildcats in the sixth inning for the games only two runs.
Gilbert walked and
Caleb Baucum singled to right to begin the inning. Catcher
Kyle Wheeler reached on a fielder's choice and Baucum was safe at second to load the bases after Rush's throw pulled shortstop Michael Brasili off the bag. First baseman
Bud Britt got Belhaven on the board with his seventh RBI of the season on a sac fly to center field. Third baseman
Jason Hicks chased home Baucum on a bunt single to make it a 2-0 game.
Meanwhile, Good continued to baffle Bethel's hitters into the seventh inning. Good got off to a shaky start in the seventh by hitting Ferrell on a 1-0 pitch followed by a one out single off the bat of Brasili. Good then buckled down to get Martin Key to foul out and pinch hitter Ryne Bivens was retired to end the inning on a fly ball to center field.
Marzoni was summoned from the bullpen to start the eighth and promptly struck out the side. Belhaven wasn't able to add any insurance runs in the home half of the eighth off Bethel reliever Cade Chambers so it was up to Marzoni to preserve the 2-0 edge in the ninth. Marzoni made it look easy, retiring the side in order for the second consecutive inning to earn the save.
Belhaven's pitching staff has been nearly perfect through the first four games of the season, boasting a 0.26 ERA after Friday's game. Good tossed seven innings allowing only three hits while Marzoni logged two innings with four more strikeouts.
Belhaven was limited to four hits and two runs by Bush and Chambers. Left fielder
Reagan Rutledge, Baucum, Britt, and Hicks each had singles. The Blazers swiped six more bases led by Baucum who had two of them.
Bethel (0-1) had only three hits in the game with one of them being a double off the bat of Jarreld. Erwin and Brasili each had singles for the Wildcats. Bush was charged with the loss for Bethel, allowing two runs on four hits in 5.1 innings. He walked five and struck out seven.
Belhaven will wrap up the three game series with Bethel on Saturday beginning with game one of a doubleheader at Smith-Wills Stadium. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 PM.
