Blazers Cruise Past Tougaloo

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – Big innings have been the theme for the first three games of the 2013 season for the Belhaven baseball team and that continued to hold true on Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers scored seven times in the sixth inning to pull away for a 10-0 victory over Tougaloo College in seven innings at Smith-Wills Stadium. Belhaven tallied five runs in the eighth on Saturday against Blue Mountain, winning that game 10-2.

Belhaven (3-0) broke through for two runs in the second when senior catcher Kyle Wheeler drilled a triple over the head of centerfielder Rodney McKay and all the way to the wall off Tougaloo (0-1) starting pitcher John Alford. Senior third baseman Bud Britt cashed in courtesy runner Josiah Richard from third on a single to center to make it a 1-0 game. Later in the inning, senior second baseman Ryne Cook collected his first hit and RBI with a two out double to right center that extended the lead to 2-0.

The Blazers tacked on their third run of the contest in the fourth frame when senior DH Scott Polzin doubled to right field with one out and moved to third on a balk by relief pitcher Avery Mason. Cook chased him home on a sacrifice fly to right field.

The flood gates broke open in the sixth when Britt reached on a single and senior third baseman Jason Hicks made it safe on a walk. After a couple of wild pitches from reliever Bennie Warner, Polzin ripped his second double of the game to left field plating Britt and Hicks. Cook promptly doubled in Polzin and then sophomore left fielder Reagan Rutledge picked up an RBI on a single up the middle.

The Blazers chalked up the innings other three runs on an RBI groundout by junior right fielder Caleb Baucum, an RBI single from Britt, and an RBI double down the left field line off the bat of Hicks, pushing the lead to 10-0. Freshman pitcher Austin McCann shut the door on Tougaloo in the seventh to put the run rule into effect.

Britt had another solid game at the plate going 3 for 4 with two runs batted in; giving him a team high six on the season. Cook was 2 for 2 with three RBI's , Polzin had two hits and two runs batted in and Rutledge continued his hot hitting with three more hits and one run batted in. Rutledge also had three of Belhaven's five stolen bases in the game and through three contests, boasts five steals and a .714 batting average. Wheeler had another multi hit game with two and Hicks had one hit, an RBI, and two runs scored.

As a team, Belhaven cranked out six more extra base hits including five doubles on Tuesday. That gives them eight doubles and 11 extra base hits in three games played this season. The Blazers own a .374 team batting average and the pitching staff has allowed only one earned run this season.

Five different pitchers worked in Tuesday's game for Belhaven including junior starter Josh Rogers who went two innings with two strikeouts. Junior Jared Miller tossed one inning, junior Andrew Gunn worked two innings, while sophomore Michael Wurster and McCann each recorded one inning. Rogers (1-0), even though he did not pitch five innings, was still credited with the win because by pre-arrangement more than three pitchers were used in the game.

Tougaloo was limited to four hits with Dustin Porter, Austin Guin, Zack Hebert, and Rodney McKay each picking up a hit. Alford (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in three innings on the mound.

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday when the team opens a three game series against Bethel University (TN) starting at 4:00 PM.
