Blazers Sweep Blue Mountain

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven baseball team completed its two game non-conference series with Blue Mountain College on Saturday with a 10-2 win over the Toppers at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers used a five run eighth inning culminating on a three run homer by senior catcher Kyle Wheeler to put the game away.

Belhaven (2-0) scored early sending two runners home in the bottom of the third. Senior Jason Hicks walked with one out and Daniel Gilbert reached on an error putting runners at first and third. Gilbert then swiped second base setting the table for junior Caleb Baucum who brought both runs in on a single to center off pitcher Channing Sanders.

Blue Mountain (0-2) cut the lead in half in the fifth on an RBI single from Brandon Berry that plated courtesy runner Brent Townsend. Belhaven junior pitcher David Hill prevented any further damage by getting Vinicius DeMelo to foul out and Thomas Russell to ground out to end the inning.

The Blazers bounced right back in the bottom of the fifth to plate two more runs and increase the lead to 4-1. Baucum drove in his third run of the game with a single to center plating Hicks, who had walked with one out. With two outs, Baucum scored when senior Bud Britt hit a line drive to center that was dropped by Ben Wallis.

In the sixth inning, junior Majer Entabi and sophomore Hamilton Harper led off with back to back singles putting runners on first and third. Junior Dominick Francia executed a perfect squeeze bunt as Entabi scampered home for a 5-1 Belhaven lead.

The Toppers pulled to within three runs in the top of the eighth when Hicks misplayed a ground ball at third base opening the door for Trae Allison to score with two outs off relief pitcher Josh Rogers. However, any thoughts of a Topper comeback were erased in the bottom of the eighth inning when the first five batters reached safely for the Blazers. Francia led off with a single followed by a base hit from Hicks. Gilbert walked to load the bases and Baucum drove in two runs on his fourth base hit of the game. With runners at first and second, Wheeler crushed his first home run of the season over the left field wall to make it a 10-2 score. Freshman relief pitcher Austin McCann shut the door on Blue Mountain in the ninth to seal the win.

Baucum led all hitters going 4 for 5 at the plate with five runs batted in for the Blazers. Wheeler had three hits and three RBI's while Reagan Rutledge and Entabi each had two hits. Francia ended the game with one hit, an RBI, and one run scored. As a team, Belhaven out hit Blue Mountain 15-8 and for the series collected 24 hits in the two games.

Hill (1-0) pitched six innings and took home his first win of the season allowing only one run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Rogers tossed two innings in relief and surrendered one unearned run while striking out two. McCann closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning. The pitching staff was outstanding in the series, allowing just one earned run in the two game series.

The Toppers had eight total hits in the game by eight different players. Berry had the lone RBI on a base hit in the fifth. Channing Sanders was charged with the loss allowing the first two runs of the game on three hits dropping his record to 0-1.

Belhaven will take the field again on Tuesday when the team hosts Tougaloo College beginning at 4:00 PM.
