CLINTON, Miss. – The Belhaven cross country team's played hosts of the Southern States Athletic Conference Championships at Choctaw Trails on Saturday morning. The men's team finished 8th in the conference meet, while the women finished in 11th place overall.
“We had a perfect day weather wise, the course was in great shape, and we had a lot of outstanding teams and runners at this year's event,” said Belhaven Head Coach
Christie Barber. “We did well and have come a long way this year and hopefully this will be something for us to build on as we head into next season.”
The women's 5k race kicked off the day with an 8:00 AM start. Belhaven looked ready to post points as a team for the first time on the season, as they dressed enough healthy athletes to run in the crisp November air.
Chloe Brown was the first Blazer to cross the Choctaw finish line, as she has for much of her sophomore campaign. Her time of 21:45.23 was one of the best all season and gave her a 41st place finish to give the Blazers their top score.
Brown was followed by regulars
Sarah McCallister in 57th,
Sarah Rivera in 69th and
Seraphine Lin in 82nd. Rounding out the scoring for Belhaven was Natalia Krier (84th) and Indi Mire (87th), who both play on the women's tennis team during the spring.
Erica Segars from Southern Wesleyan posted the top time of the day, finishing just a hair over 19 minutes for the 5k race.
Lee University came in first place with 72 total points with Southern Wesleyan (78 points) and Emmanuel (87 points) rounding out the top three. Belhaven finished with 301 points, ahead of Auburn-Montgomery, who totaled the highest total time on the day.
In the men's race,
Thorburn McGee was the first Belhaven runner to make his way over to the goal. McGee has been the most consistent runner on the men's team in 2012 and continued that trend in the final race of the season.
He posted a time of 28:50.07 over the 8k race, which was good enough for 38th place.
Ben Storment and Matthew Fox weren't far behind McGee with Storment in 48th and Fox finishing three spots behind him in 51st. Both runners posted good times.
Andrew Sinclair and
John Lane finished in back to back spots at 63rd and 64th to round out the scoring for the Blazers.
Emmanuel won the SSAC crown going away. All five of their scorers finished in the top ten and they placed 13 runners in the top 50. Some teams didn't place two of their top runners in the top 50, so the mark is an impressive one.
The individual winner of the race was William Carey runner Joash Osoro. Osoro has been the conference runner of the week for much of the 2012 season and showed why on Saturday morning.
