JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's and Women's Cross Country teams continued their fall season on familiar ground Friday morning, competing at the Watson Collegiate XC Classic at Choctaw Trails.
Women's 6K
Belhaven's women's squad took part in a deep 6K field led by competitors from Union (Tenn.), Mississippi College, and William Carey. The Blazers were paced by
Ashley Davidson who finished with a team-best time of 25:57.52. Davidson set a PR in the 6K, improving her best time by over 45 seconds. Several Blazers followed close behind, including
Brycelyn Townsend (30:25.0),
Courtney Adams (30:27.3) and
Ruth Dixon (31:02.0) and
Jocelyn Belonga (31:47.8).
The women's race was won by Union's Addi Aguayo (21:27.8), with Mississippi College taking three of the top six overall spots.
Men's 8K
On the men's side, the Blazers battled through a competitive 8K race that featured multiple NCAA Division II and NAIA programs. East Texas A&M's Jeremiah Garcia earned the individual title with a winning time of 24:26.2, while Mississippi College placed several runners inside the top 30.
Garrett Masters led the Blazers' effort, finishing with a steady time of 29:22.1. Freshman
Max Bowling (29:45.2) and senior
Donovan Hurst (30:40.3) each finished with PR's. Bowling improved his best time by 12 seconds while Hurst ran the 8K under 31-minutes for the first time in his career.
Sophomore
Matthew Wells (31:32.6), Senior
Andrew Duckworth (31:53.0) and Peyton Vandevuss (34:00.8) rounded out the Blazers in scoring.
Belhaven returns to action in two weeks when both teams travel to compete in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Championship, also set to be held in Birmingham, Alabama. The meet will be the final tune-up before the NCAA South Regional Championships in early November.
