Blazers Close Regular Season with Victory at Faulkner

Montgomery, AL-The Belhaven volleyball team wrapped up the 2011 regular season on Friday night with a 3-0 straight set Southern States Athletic Conference victory at Faulkner University. The Blazers settled the outcome with final set scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-17. Belhaven will open the postseason in the SSAC Tournament next week in Gulfport, MS.

Belhaven (23-13, 6-8 SSAC) was anchored on offense by junior Natalie Davis who slammed 12 kills and turned in a .385 hitting percentage in the match to lead the Blazer attackers. Senior Christina Atwood followed with eight kills and junior Samantha O'Malley ended the night with seven kills. Senior Serita Ingram was a wall up front on defense registering three solo blocks and two block assists in the match giving her 106 total blocks on the year. Atwood also had four block assists and has a team best 131 total blocks in 2011. Sophomore Gabriella Zorzoli thwarted 20 Faulkner attack attempts thanks to 20 digs and junior Erin Bradley handed out 26 assists and picked up 16 digs in the match.

Faulkner (18-19, 2-12 SSAC) was guided on offense by Neysa Hernandez with nine kills trailed by Autumn Benson with seven kills. Morgan Wilson dished out 12 assists and Abbie Melvin controlled 21 digs.

Belhaven will meet up with Lee University in the opening round of the SSAC Tournament on Friday November 11th in Gulfport, MS. The Blazers are the number four seed from the West Division and Lee owns the top spot in the East Division. Friday's game time is yet to be determined.
