JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven came from behind to win the opening set and survived a late Piedmont rally in the third, sweeping the Lions 27-25, 25-18, 26-24 Saturday afternoon at Rugg Arena. The Senior Day victory moved the Blazers to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in Collegiate Conference of the South play, with three straight wins against CCS opponents.
Megan LaCour led Belhaven with 14 kills and added 14 digs.
Tarryn Woodall posted 11 kills and 14 digs, while
Kayla Robinson paced the back row with 15 digs. The Blazers finished with an 8-1 advantage in blocks and held Piedmont to a .076 hitting percentage.
Piedmont led the first set 23-20 before LaCour and
Asia Price delivered consecutive kills to start Belhaven's comeback. Two Lions attack errors put the Blazers in front 24-23, but Piedmont answered and the teams remained tied at 25. Woodall then put away a kill and followed it with a solo block to give Belhaven the 27-25 win.
The Blazers found separation midway through the second set. Leading 12-11, they scored five straight points behind kills from Woodall, LaCour and
Laila Gauthier, a LaCour-
Goldie Lowe block and a Piedmont attack error. Belhaven held the lead from there, and Gauthier finished the 25-18 set with a kill.
Belhaven appeared headed for a comfortable finish in the third after building a 24-19 lead. Piedmont fought off five match points to tie the set at 24, but Gauthier's kill gave the Blazers another chance, and a Lions attack error ended the match.
Gauthier had eight kills and three block assists. Lowe contributed three kills, five block assists and two aces, while
Angel Edwards and
Kylie Lindsey shared setting duties with 17 and 15 assists, respectively. Belhaven outhit Piedmont .203 to .076 and held a 42-36 edge in kills. Lillian Gaskins led the Lions (9-7, 1-4 CCS) with 13 kills.
