Blazers Rally in Second Set to Complete Sweep of Agnes Scott

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven hit a season-best .424 and piled up 14 service aces Friday night in a 3-0 sweep of Agnes Scott at Rugg Arena. The Blazers won 25-9, 27-25, 25-14 to improve to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in Collegiate Conference of the South play.

Maggie Joy Tomlin ran the offense with 31 assists and matched her season high with nine aces. Tarryn Woodall and Megan LaCour had 11 kills apiece, while Laila Gauthier added seven without an attack error. Belhaven finished with 43 kills and just seven errors on 85 swings.

Tomlin opened the match with back-to-back aces, and Woodall followed with a kill. Leading 6-2, Belhaven scored seven straight points with Goldie Lowe at the service line to break open the first set. Tomlin closed the 25-9 win with two more aces. The Blazers hit .407 in the frame and held the Scotties to a negative hitting percentage.

The second set was a different test. It featured 18 ties and five lead changes, and Agnes Scott held a 24-22 advantage with two chances to even the match. Woodall answered with a kill, LaCour and Lowe combined for a block to tie it, and Woodall served an ace to put Belhaven ahead 25-24. After the Scotties drew level, Gauthier delivered consecutive kills to secure the 27-25 win.

Tomlin again set the tone from the service line in the third, landing four aces as Belhaven raced to a 5-0 lead. Agnes Scott pulled within 9-7, but the Blazers took control with a six-point run that stretched a 14-10 margin to 20-10. LaCour had two kills and Woodall served two aces during the surge. Belhaven did not commit an attack error in the final set, hitting .650 on its way to a 25-14 finish.

Woodall hit .714 with 11 kills on 14 swings, and LaCour hit .435. Gauthier finished at .636, while Kayla Robinson led the Blazers with eight digs. Belhaven held a 43-23 edge in kills and a 40-19 advantage in assists. Madison Stidum led Agnes Scott (2-8, 0-5 CCS) with eight kills.

Belhaven returns to Rugg Arena tomorrow to face Piedmont at noon for Senior Day.
