Solid Second Half Propels Blazers to Victory

Blue Mountain, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team went on the road for the first time this season and came away with a 78-61 win at Blue Mountain College Tuesday night. It was the second victory for the Blazers over the Toppers this year. Belhaven opened the season with a 100-73 win over Blue Mountain in Rugg Arena on November 1st.
 
In the first half, the Toppers were able to hang right with the Blazers as both teams traded basket for basket throughout the first 20 minutes of play. Blue Mountain jumped out to the early lead on an opening three point basket by Chuck Barnes with just over a minute gone by in the first half. The Toppers biggest lead was four points and that was at the 11:30 mark of the opening period. At that point the Blazers would lead for the rest of the half, with their largest advantage being eight points, 34-26 with 2:23 to go in the first period. Blue Mountain then scored eight unanswered points to knot the score at 34-34 heading into the break.
 
Korey Whiting led the offense for the Blazers in the first half scoring 12 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Overall, the Blazers struggled offensively shooting just 32 percent from the field and 17 percent from three point range. The Toppers were led by Jon Estes with 10 points and as a team the Toppers hit 38 percent of their field goals.
 
The second half belonged to the Blazers as Dax Miller got things going 20 seconds into the second half by drilling a field goal to put Belhaven back on top. The Toppers took the lead again briefly with just under 18 minutes to go on a bucket by Josh Whitson. The Blazer offense then kicked it gear and never looked back. With about eight minutes to go, Belhaven built a ten point lead and led by double digits the rest of the way cruising to the 17 point victory.
 
Four Blazers scored in double figures led by Dax Miller with a game high 19 points. Korey Whiting had another solid outing pouring in 18 points and securing 13 rebounds in route to the double double. Phillip Holmes chipped in with 14 points and Iman Walcott added 10 points in the Blazer victory. For the game, Belhaven shot 39 percent from the field and dominated the boards by a 50-35 margin over Blue Mountain. The Blazers defense also forced 22 Topper turnovers and held Blue Mountain to 33 percent shooting from the field.
 
Belhaven returns to action Thursday night as the head over to Tuscaloosa to battle the University of Alabama in an Exhibition contest. The game is slated to get underway at 7 PM.
