Blazers Men's Soccer Rallies for 2-2 Draw in Season Opener

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - The Belhaven men's Soccer team erased an early two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against United States Sports University in Tuesday's season opener.

USSU scored twice in a span of 62 seconds to take control early. Nathan Webb opened the scoring in the sixth off an assist from Camrin Pearson before setting up Keandre Hernandez for the Eagles' second goal at 7:42.

Belhaven began working its way back into the match, with Courtland Williams forcing a save in the 14th minute. The Blazers broke through at 27:46 when Mauro Hernandez scored off a feed from CJ Koppeis to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Blazers carried that momentum into the second half and controlled the run of play. Belhaven outshot USSU 11-1 over the final 45 minutes and put together several chances in search of the equalizer. Diego Sarzalejo forced a save early in the half before Mauro Hernandez and Ricardo Flores had attempts blocked minutes apart.

Flores eventually pulled the Blazers level at the 75th minute. The senior finished with a match-high five shots and continued to create chances after the equalizer, recording two more attempts over the next eight minutes. Belhaven kept the pressure on late, with Adrian Sanchez, Tyler Milioto and Graham Harris each getting a shot away during the closing stretch. USSU's lone second-half attempt came in the 85th minute and sailed high.

The Blazers finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Belhaven also held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Mauro Hernandez scored on one of his two attempts, while Sarzalejo placed both of his shots on goal. Koppeis recorded the Blazers' lone assist. Charlton McMorris played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.

Belhaven moves to 0-0-1, while United States Sports University is now 0-1-1.

The Blazers return to action on Saturday against Emory in Atlanta. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
