ATLANTA, Ga. - After a strong weekend on the mound, Belhaven senior
Cole Burton has been named the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It marks the first career weekly honor for Burton.
Burton turned in his best outing of the season in Belhaven's series against Covenant, helping the No. 19 Blazers secure a series win and improve to 20-8 overall. He worked 7.2 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out a career-high 10. He also held opposing hitters to a .148 batting average in the outing.
The performance continued a steady stretch for Burton, who has been a regular in the weekend rotation. Through seven starts this season, the senior is 4-1 with 27 strikeouts across 30.1 innings. Â
His outing against Covenant set the tone early in the series, giving Belhaven a chance to control the weekend and ultimately take two of three games.
Burton's ability to work deep into the game proved key. He navigated multiple traffic situations, limiting damage and keeping Covenant from stringing together big innings. His 10 strikeouts were a season high and tied for the most by a Blazer pitcher in a single game this year.
The honor comes as part of a strong overall start for Belhaven's pitching staff. As a team, the Blazers have posted a 5.63 ERA, the second-lowest in the CCS, across 232.0 innings this season.
Burton and the Blazers return home for a three-game series later this week vs. LaGrange. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM on Friday.
