THE TOURNAMENT AND HISTORY
It all starts Wednesday morning at Trustmark Park. Three games on day one, then the bracket tightens up quick with the double-elimination format carrying things through Saturday. Belhaven comes in as the No. 2 seed and opens with LaGrange. The Blazers finished tied for first in the league, with Piedmont grabbing the top spot on the tiebreaker.
This is year four for the CCS Tournament. Piedmont won the first one, Maryville followed, and Huntingdon took last season's title. Belhaven made that final last year and fell just short.
THIS YEAR AGAINST TOURNAMENT TEAMS
Belhaven's most recent look at the field came against LaGrange a few weeks ago at Trustmark Park. The Blazers swept the series in three one-run games.
Game one went to extras before Belhaven pulled it out 4-3. Game two turned late, with a six-run eighth making the difference in a 6-5 win. In the finale, the Blazers were down four before a five-run sixth flipped it into a 7-6 win.
Every game was tight. LaGrange scored early. Belhaven answered late.
THE BELHAVEN BREAKDOWN
Belhaven heads into the tournament at 28-11 and on a three-game win streak after sweeping Asbury to close the regular season.
The lineup has been steady all year. The Blazers are hitting .305 with a .421 on-base percentage and 300 runs scored. There isn't just one guy carrying it. It is a group that keeps innings going.
Austin Canale leads the way at .355 with 40 RBI.
Hayden Roberts is right behind at .352 and has been consistent in the middle of the order.
JD Weed is hitting .343, and
Parker Ryan has added pop with five home runs.
On the mound, Belhaven has leaned on a mix of arms.
Gunner Staten has been one of the more reliable options in the league, sitting at a 3.38 ERA and limiting damage.
Cole Burton has emerged as a strong second arm, with the lowest batting average against in CCS play (.202), and
John Wade has handled the ninth with eight saves, the second-most in NCAA Division III.
HOME FIELD NOTE
It is technically a neutral site, but Belhaven has been here before. The Blazers have already played at Trustmark Park this season, including the LaGrange series, and they have been strong in home settings overall at 21-1.
KEY TRENDS
• 28-11 overall record
• 300 runs scored on the year
• 77 stolen bases
• Three straight wins entering the tournament
THE COMPETITORS
Piedmont earned the top seed and brings the best offense in the league by the numbers. The Lions are hitting .339 as a team and have multiple hitters near the top of the conference in average and OPS. They can score in bunches.
Maryville sits right behind with a strong balance. The Scots have the top ERA in the league at 4.32 and have also hit for power, sitting near the top in home runs. They have arms that can keep games under control.
Huntingdon leans more on pitching and defense. They lead the league in fielding percentage and have been steady on the mound. They are also the defending champs, so they have been through this before.
LaGrange might be the five seed, but the offense stands out. The Panthers are hitting .329 as a team, second in the conference, and have several hitters among the league leaders. That showed in the series against Belhaven. They can put runs up quick.
Asbury rounds out the field. They have had some ups and downs, but they have arms that can miss bats and enough offense to make things interesting if they get going.
