SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Belhaven Men's Golf team opened spring competition this week at the Port City Classic, a two-day tournament at the Savannah Country Club.
Facing a large and competitive NCAA Division III field, the Blazers finished 20th overall with a three-round score of +94, highlighted by a strong improvement during the final round of play.
Belhaven opened the tournament with a first-round score of +29, led by a solid round from
Schaefer Doane, who paced the Blazers with a 75 (+4) to start the event.
John McIntosh followed closely with a 78 (+7), while
Levi Turner carded a 79 (+8).
Gannon Williams and
Andrew Scherer rounded out the opening lineup with rounds of 81 (+10) and 82 (+11) respectively.
The Blazers encountered a challenging second round on the difficult Savannah Country Club layout, finishing the day at +47 as a team. McIntosh, Scherer, and Doane each posted 85s during the middle round of competition.
Belhaven responded in a big way on the final day of the tournament. The Blazers shaved nearly thirty strokes off their second-round score, finishing the event with their best round of the week at +18. Williams led the charge with an career-best 69 (-2), the only sub-par round recorded by a Blazer during the tournament. His final-round surge moved him up the individual leaderboard and secured the team's lowest 54-hole total.
Williams finished the tournament at +13 overall, improving each round with scores of 81, 76, and 69 to lead the Belhaven lineup.
McIntosh provided consistent play throughout the event, finishing second among the Blazers at +21 after rounds of 78, 85, and 71. Scherer concluded the tournament at +33, while Turner and Doane each finished at +36 over the three rounds.
Belhaven will look to build on the momentum from its strong final round as the Blazers continue their spring schedule in upcoming events later this month. The Blazers are back in action on Monday, March 16th at the Hal Sutton Invitational in Shreveport, La.
