LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN – One season after making their first trip to the CCS Championship, the Belhaven Men's Soccer team is back and looking to flip the script against Covenant in a rematch of last year's final.
The Blazers enter Saturday's league final at 11-3-4 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play which earned them the second seed in this year's tournament and a bye straight to the semifinal. Belhaven dispatched No.3 Asbury in the CCS Semifinals with a dominant 4-1 performance which marked the Blazers' fifth straight win overall.
Now they return to Lookout Mountain where they drew the top seeded Covenant Scots, 0-0, during the regular season. The Scots sit 12-2-3 on the year and went 4-0-2 during the CCS regular season to clinch conference's regular season crown. In their semifinal, Covenant took down No. 4 Maryville 2-1 with a 75
th minute goal the decider.
Saturday's contest is sure to be a grind with the league's two best defensive programs squaring off. Belhaven allowed just 13 goals in 18 matches with goalkeeper
Danny Bahena earning the CCS Goalkeeper of the Year distinction.
Right behind them, Covenant allowed just 14 goals in 17 matches and allowed opposition just 263 shots total on the campaign.
In attack, the teams also post similar numbers with Belhaven registering 38 goals on the year while Covenant scored 35. That discrepancy does grow in Belhaven's favor though when you factor in non-penalty goals with the Blazers having no attempted a penalty on the season and Covenant converting 7 of their 8 opportunities.
Last year's championship saw Belhaven fall 2-0 but the Blazers feel renewed depth and big match experience will help them in this year's contest.
Kickoff between the Blazers and Scots is set for 1:00 PM Central at Scotland Yard in Georgia.
