TUPELO, Miss. - Adrian Sanchez scored in the 13th minute to pull Belhaven level, but Sewanee answered before halftime and added a late goal to defeat the Blazers 3-1 on Thursday.
Belhaven (6-6-1) outshot Sewanee 14-12, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Sanchez put all three of his attempts on target, while Ivan Quiñones added three shots.
Sewanee struck first at 5:19 on a goal by Holden Patterson. The Blazers responded with pressure of their own.
Ciaran Colvin forced a save in the 11th minute, and Sanchez finished a chance set up by
Wyatt Dupre at 12:46 to tie the match.
Courtland Williams put a shot on goal in the 23rd minute, but Sewanee goalkeeper Reid Gunzenhauser made the stop. Thomas McGowan restored the Tigers' lead at 29:42, sending Sewanee into halftime ahead 2-1.
Belhaven kept pushing after the break and held a 6-3 advantage in second-half shots. Gunzenhauser saved a Quiñones attempt in the 66th minute before Stokes McConnell scored for Sewanee at 79:07. Sanchez tested Gunzenhauser once more in the 88th minute, but the goalkeeper made his fifth save of the match.
Justin Ramirez recorded two saves for Belhaven. The teams finished even with five corner kicks apiece.
Belhaven returns to Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 10, to face Asbury in a CCS match. Kickoff for Senior Day is set for 7:30 p.m.
