Blazers Split Friday Doubleheader Against Comets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven baseball team took the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the visiting University of Texas at Dallas Comets setting up a Game 3 rubber match on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE

In the first game of the two game set, the visitors jumped out to an early lead scoring twice in the opening frame. UT-Dallas would add two more runs to their lead in the second inning and take an early 4-0 lead in the scheduled seven inning contest.

The Comets added three runs between the fifth and sixth innings taking a 7-0 lead before the Blazers finally broke through in the home half of the 6th inning. The Blazers first base runner, hit and run came through the bats of Adam Leonard and Kyle McLaughlin. Leonard delivered the first Belhaven hit of the game on a base hit up the middle and then came around to score on an RBI double by DH Kyle McLaughlin

In the top of the 7th inning the Comets would get the run back and extend their lead on a two-run home run to take the game 9-1 in seven innings.

GAME TWO

The Comets struck first in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring a run off Blazers' starter Brett Sanchez in the top of the 1st inning. The Blazers answered on an RBI single from Trip Benson that scored Nick Lucido from third base.

UT-Dallas would retake the lead in the top of the 2nd inning on a solo home run from Deylan Moreno and would maintain their 2-1 lead into the 6th inning with neither team able to produce runs. In the bottom of the 6th though, Hunter White led off the inning with a triple and Trip Benson put together a strong piece of situational hitting with a groundball to second base to score White from third.

In the bottom of the eighth Belhaven's offense would heat up with four runs on five straight hits to open the inning. Trip Benson's base hit scored Julyan Urena before Nathan Herron tripled to right field and scored a pair of runs. Kyle McLaughlin would cap off the scoring burst with an RBI single to right field. The Blazers took their 6-2 lead into the 9th inning where Brett Sanchez finished off his fifth complete game of the season and earned the Blazers the conference win.

In the second game Belhaven starter Brett Sanchez went all nine innings and allowed just two runs on three hits. Sanchez recorded eight strikeouts and improved to 8-1 on the season.

At the plate the middle of the order did the damage for the Blazers. Hunter White finished 2-4 with a triple and a pair of runs scored. Trip Benson finished 2-4 as well with 3 RBI and a run scored while Nathan Herron went 2-4 with a triple and a pair of RBI.
