Baseball Preview: Eureka and Louisiana College

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven baseball will look to rebound from a 1-3 week as the Green and Gold step out of conference play for a four-game week in two cities. BU will take on Eureka (Ill.) on Wednesday from Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson before traveling to Pineville, La. for the Marler Ford Classic with host Louisiana College and Eureka.

Last week, BU (7-6) defeated Millsaps in the second game of the Cowboy Maloney Series from Twenty Field at Millsaps, defeating the Majors, 8-6.

Traveling away from Jackson for the first time this season, the Green and Gold had an immediate test with 13th-ranked UT Tyler. The Blazers were swept in the series by the Patriots, 8-3, 4-0 and 15-6.

Terrell Hodges smashed a home run in the series, while Will Costinett blasted two dingers on the week.

The Red Devils began the 2017 season with a spring break trip to Mississippi and Louisiana. The team defeated Rust in Holly Springs, 27-1, on Sunday afternoon. Eureka will be in Jackson to take on both the Blazers and Millsaps on Tuesday and Wednesday before meeting them again at Louisiana College this weekend.

The Red Devils and the Blazers met in an interesting way last season. Not listed on the schedule at the start, that changed drastically last March. When Belhaven's three-game conference series at Howard Payne was cancelled due to the rains and floods from a year ago, head coach Hill Denson immediately found three games for that weekend. Tougaloo and Eureka was scheduled to play at Tougaloo College, but thanks to the rains in the area last March, the Blazers were able to get the teams moved to Smith-Wills on the turf field to play their games. While Eureka and Tougaloo played each other, the Blazers also played both teams as well.

The Red Devils finished 9-26 in 2016, and are picked to finish fifth in the west division of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).

Hodges recorded a triple and two stolen bases, while Tanner Cable threw five innings of one-hit, shutout baseball in the Blazers 15-1 win over the Red Devils a year ago.

Preview: Louisiana College
The Wildcats have a 9-3 overall record, coming off a series victory at McMurry in Abilene. After falling 7-2 in the opener, LC posted come-from-behind victories in the next two games with 11-4 and 12-6 victories.

Ashton Martin leads LC with a .519 average (14-for-27) with 6 RBIs.

Seth Stephens has two horn runs and 19 driven in so far in 12 games in 2017.

As a team, the Wildcats has a team ERA of 2.59, with the starting rotation has an ERA of 2.94 or less. Austin Thompson has a 2.00 ERA in four starts, while Charlie Waddingham has posted a 2.11 ERA this season.

In 2016, the Green and Gold played the Wildcats six times and took all six games a year ago. The two games on the schedule will not count toward the ASC standings.

Tuesday's contest vs. the Red Devils has been pushed back to Wednesday due to the incliment weather conditions in the Jackson-area. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.

During the Marler Ford Classic, BU will take on LC Friday evening at 4 p.m. from Billy Allgood Field. On Saturday, the Blazers take on Eureka at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend with the hosts at 4 p.m.
