JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven baseball team prepares to host the Tornados of Concordia University Texas, beginning this Friday at Smith-Wills Stadium as the five-game homestand continues for the Green and Gold.
With the impending weather arriving this weekend, Saturday's doubleheader has been moved to Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday's series finale will start at 10 a.m.
Belhaven will look to rebound after being shut out by Millsaps, 10-0, on Tuesday night. Prior to the loss, the Green and Gold took two of three from McMurry in Abilene, Texas.
The Blazers (12-9, 4-5 ASC) have been hitting the ball well at Smith-Wills Stadium. BU is hitting .315 with a .480 slugging percentage at the friendly confines, and have launched seven home runs, driven in 60 runs and outscored their opponents, 70-54.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Blazers have allowed visiting hitters to a .229 average with 82 strikeouts. BU's pitching staff has posted a 3.84 ERA in 11 home games.
Terrell Hodges has posted a .432 average at home this season with two homers, and leads the team with 13 RBIs.
In the series finale against McMurry last Saturday, the senior stole four bases in the Blazers' 8-3 victory over the War Hawks.
Tyler Wolfe will look to the home field for some relief on the mound. In his last start at Smith-Wills on Feb. 25, the Houston, Texas native went the distance in the Blazers' 13-3 victory against Hardin-Simmons, allowing three runs while striking out seven.
Concordia Texas (15-8, 7-2) began receiving votes in the latest D3Baseball.Com Top 25 Poll after taking two of three from Mary Hardin-Baylor at home last weekend.
After falling 3-1 in the series opener, the Tornados outscored the Cru 24-6 in the doubleheader sweep to take the series.
Colton Poindexter leads the team in hitting with a .349 average with 14 RBIs. But the man to watch on the base paths is Race Mellman, who leads the ASC in steals with 12. Mellman is hitting .250 on the season, but has an on-base percentage of .380 thanks to 15 walks.
The Tornados have posted a team ERA of 3.48, good for third in the conference, Matthew Brown leads the team in ERA with a 2.10 in nine appearances. Making four starts for Concordia, Brown is 3-1 on the season, and has allowed two walks in 34.1 innings.
CTX swept the Blazers last season in Austin and finished the season with a 28-15 overall record, 19-5 in ASC play.
