JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven baseball team concludes its four-city, 10-game trip with a three-game American Southwest Conference series with the McMurry War Hawks, beginning on Friday afternoon from Walt Driggers Field in Abilene, Texas. All three games will have live audio on the Blazers Sports Network.
Friday will be a doubleheader, beginning at 3 p.m., while Saturday's finale is slated for 1 p.m.
The Green and Gold (10-7, 2-4 ASC) are coming off a 3-1 week where they scored 34 total runs while allowing only nine against Eureka and Louisiana College.Â
The Blazers opened the week with a 12-2 victory against Eureka on Wednesday afternoon from Smith-Wills Stadium. Two days later, Belhaven was a participant in the Marler Ford Classic at Louisiana College. In Friday's contest, BU defeated the host Wildcats 11-3 thanks to a three-home run performance by
Stephen Sexton, becoming the first Blazer to accomplish this feat in over eight years in school history while tying an ASC record last set in 2014.Â
In Saturday's doubleheader, the Blazers shut out the Red Devils of Eureka, 10-0, before falling to LC in the finale, 4-1.Â
Sexton finished the week hitting 8-for-16 with the aforementioned three homers and eight RBIs.Â
The Blazers have also seen another bat come to life in the batting order.Â
Daniel Ammirati, who bats behind Sexton in the batting order, has been getting on base efficiently in the month of March. The Queens, N.Y. native has posted a .500 (14-for-28) batting average this month, with two homers, three RBIs and eight runs scored. Thanks to the two bombs he hit over the weekend, the senior is posting a.786 slugging percentage in the month of March.
Ammirati is also leading the team in hitting for the season with a .433 batting average, a .477 on-base percentage and a .650 slugging percentage in 2017. He will head to Abilene riding a six-game hitting streak.Â
Switching to the mound, the Blazers pitching staff have developed a midweek starter who can also work a couple of innings over the weekend.
David Hall, now 3-1 on the season, has posted a 1.23 ERA this month, allowing one earned run in 7.1 innings.Â
On the season, the freshman has allowed seven earned runs in 17.1 innings, good for a 3.68 ERA.Â
Shane Brown, who had a perfect game bid go into the fifth inning in his last start, has a 2.77 ERA in the month of March.Â
In the last series, the Green and Gold took two of three from the War Hawks in Jackson, Since Belhaven's transition to NCAA Division III, BU is 6-3 against MCM.Â
McMurry (7-10, 3-3), who recently took two of three from the Ozarks last weekend, is just 3-6 at Walt Driggers Field in 2017.Â
Jack Poe, who went 1.1 innings of scoreless relief at Smith-Wills earlier in the season, is 3-1 with a 2.75 ERAÂ
Tyler Jenkins and Noah Clarkson lead the offensive charge for McMurry, with batting averages of .350 and .322, respectively, in 17 games eachÂ
Clarkson has racked up 10 runs and 19 hits on the season, while Jenkins leads the team with three homers and tied for the team lead with Clarkson with 12.Â
