JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's basketball team is preparing for its final road trip of the regular season, as the Green and Gold travel to Texas Tyler and LeTourneau this weekend.
Tip off for this weekend's games will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against UT Tyler and Saturday at 1 p.m. against LeTourneau.
The Blazers (11-10) are coming off a 1-1 week with back-to-back home games against the Ozarks and Texas Dallas. Belhaven defeated UO last Thursday, 85-64, before dropping Saturday's contest to UTD, 88-58.
Belhaven is currently 4-6 away from Rugg Arena this season, and will look to
Sierra Pittman, who is averaging 14.8 points per game this season in away matchups. On the 2016-17 campaign, the senior's 13.9 points per game is ranked 10th in the American Southwest Conference (ASC) and fifth in the Mideast region of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).
Every time the Green and Gold are on the floor, they bring their invitations to a block party. On the season, the Blazers are averaging 4.1 blocks per game, good for a tie for second in the ASC and sixth-best in the NCCAA. On the road, the Blazers have recorded 36 of the team's 87 blocks.
Coming off a four-block effort against UT Dallas,
Vamikka Smith has swatted away 32 opponent's shots, 17 of those away from Rugg Arena. The Mobile, Ala. native's 1.4 per game average is good for fourth in the ASC and a tie for ninth in the NCCAA.
Preview: University of Texas at Tyler
The last time these two teams met, there were a combined 66 made field goals and a combined 45 percent mark from the field in the Blazers' 104-95 overtime loss to the Patriots. There were 12 ties and nine lead changes in the contest, where the Blazers had three in double figures: Pittman with 29,
Candler Gregory with 18 and
Samara Dingiswayo with 11.
The Patriots (17-5) extended their winning streak to six games with a 103-78 victory against Louisiana College last Saturday. Thanks to these two games surpassing the century mark, the Patriots lead the ASC in scoring with a 78.4 per game average, and they are averaging a +12.9 margin in scoring, good for second in the ASC. UTT is ranked tops in the ASC in field goal shooting (44 percent) and second in 3-point shooting (32.9 percent).
Michelle Obach leads all scorers with an average of 15.1 per game, good for sixth in the ASC. She is also in a tie for fifth place in assists with 3.4 per game.
Preview: LeTourneau University
In the last contest against LETU on Jan. 19 in Jackson, the Blazers dropped the contest to the Yellow Jackets, 75-65. Dingiswayo totaled 14 points and a career high 14 boards for the Green and Gold.
LeTourneau (12-10) is coming off a road sweep of East Texas Baptist and Louisiana College last week. The Yellow Jackets have the fourth-best scoring team in the ASC at 70.2 per game, but are second-to-last in the conference in scoring defense (74.2). While Belhaven is currently at the top of the league in defensive 3-point shooting (25.1 percent), LETU is fourth on that list, allowing almost 29 percent from beyond the arc.
On Feb. 2, both Crystal Jones and LaTanya Drakes earned career milestones against Louisiana College. Jones, who scored 36 points in their last matchup against Belhaven, surpassed the 1,000-career point mark. Drakes, who contributed a 9-point, 17-rebound performance against the Blazers, moved past 500 rebounds in her career.
Jones and Drakes are currently one-two in the ASC in scoring, averaging 22 and 17.1 points per game, respectively. Drakes is atop of the ASC in rebounding, however, averaging 14.3 per game. Of her 301 total boards, 116 have come on the offensive end.
