JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven baseball will wrap up their season-opening nine-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series against Hardin-Simmons to open American Southwest Conference play.
Friday, the two teams will play two, with a 4 p.m. first pitch, while the series finale will commence on Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on the Blazers Sports Network.
The Green and Gold will look to bounce back after falling to Millsaps in the Cowboy Maloney Series Opener, 6-3, Tuesday night at Smith-Wills Stadium.
Belhaven, after getting the 1-0 lead early, allowed five runs in the fourth inning to fall to the Majors to give Millsaps the lead for good.
Last season, BU and HSU matched up at Hunter Field in Abilene, Texas. The Green and Gold took the first two games of the series, 7-1 and 12-0, before falling in the finale, 8-7.
Terrell Hodges went 3-for-12 on the plate, drawing three walks, stole three bases and scoring four times in the series with HSU a year ago, while
Gabe Veith recorded four hits and three RBIs in the series.
Shane Brown allowed four runs in 5.1 innings in a no decision, while striking out two.
In 2016, HSU posted a 29-18 record, finishing runner-up in the 2016 ASC Baseball Championship Series to UT Tyler.
Leading the Cowboys (3-4) charge is Dylan Sweeney, who is hitting .346 (9-for-26) with two doubles, a home run and eight driven in so far in 2017.
Anthony Beasley has driven in six RBIs, while totaling 10 hits, while Taylor Cooling leads Hardin-Simmons in the hit column with 11 in his first seven games played.
The Green and Gold were able to slow Cooling's bat, but not his arm in last season's series. Against BU, he went 2-for-9 in the series, but he recorded the save in the series finale with a scoreless ninth inning.
On the mound, Cooling has only recorded 1.1 innings of relief work with a strikeout, but in 2016, the junior posted a 3.29 ERA and went 2-1 with 11 saves in 18 appearances.
Jeremy Hallmark has made two starts for the Cowboys, while allowing two earned runs in 11.2 innings in 2017. One of the key returners in the rotation for HSU in 2017, the senior posted 13 starts and a 3-3 record with a 6.86 ERA.
