Blazers Prepare for Second Half of ASC East Schedule

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's basketball team return to the familiar hardwood of Rugg Arena this weekend as the Green and Gold prepares for the second half of the American Southwest Conference (ASC) East schedule, beginning Thursday night with the Ozarks.

With the turn in the conference slate, the Blazers will host four of their final six regular season games.

In the first go-round with the ASC East, Belhaven went 2-4, defeating Louisiana College and East Texas Baptist.

The Blazers will tip off against the Eagles at 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening, and the weekend will conclude with Texas Dallas at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Six of Belhaven's 10 wins have occurred inside Rugg Arena, and the Green and Gold (10-9) are averaging 73.2 points per game and a scoring margin of +5.

From the field, the Blazers are shooting 42 percent compared to allowing 36.3 percent on defense. From downtown, Belhaven is shooting 31 percent in comparison to allowing 23 percent by opponents.

Leading the charge on the familiar floor is Sierra Pittman, who is averaging 13.7 points per game inside Rugg, while shooting 56.5 percent from the field.

Candler Gregory has scored 12.8 per game in nine contests in Rugg, with a 36 percent mark from outside the arc.

Samara Dingiswayo has found the stroke in the month of January. The senior averaged 12 points per game in the first month of 2017, while shooting 40 percent (24-for-60) from downtown. She will look to continue her hot shooting from 3-point land this weekend, where she is averaging 9.9 points per game at home, and will look to improve on a 29 percent percentage from three.

Leading by one heading into the final quarter, the Blazers were unable to stop Bryanna Moltz, who drained a 3-pointer to give the Ozarks (9-11) the lead for good with 6:07 left in regulation, defeating BU 74-65. Moltz, who led the team with seven points in the quarter, finished with 22 points on 8-for-21 shooting, including 5-of-10 from downtown, 13 rebounds and five assists.

Rose Robinson and Delanei Stephens each were two rebounds away from a double-double, with 13 points and eight boards for Stephens and 10 points and eight rebounds for Robinson.

Dingiswayo, for Belhaven, tallied a career-best 28 points in the loss, while tying a school record for seven made 3-points, the first to accomplish this feat since 2011.

In the first matchup, the UTD (17-3) defense held up to its hype. The toughest team to score on in the ASC allowed the Blazers to their second-lowest in points with 48 and field goal shooting of 27.5 percent.

Pittman led BU in the contest with 14 points and four assists.

The Comets had four players in double figures, led by Alyssa Crockett with 19 points, while Kayla Reinhart tallied 15 points.
