JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's basketball team continues its three-game homestand with a non-conference battle with Rhodes College Saturday afternoon inside Rugg Arena.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on the Blazers Sports Network.
The Blazers (1-0) are coming off a 72-68 victory against Millsaps on Wednesday night in the women's basketball edition of the Riverside Rumble.
After the Majors rallied from a 14-point deficit to tie the game at 68 apiece with 42 seconds left in regulation,
Tajee Harper broke the tie on the next possession to give the Blazers the lead for good.
Candler Gregory led the Blazers with 14 points in 31 minutes of action, including 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
The Green and Gold will look for their early success off the bench to continue on Saturday. Belhaven out-scored Millsaps, 44-11, in bench points.
Leading the charge off the bench was the duo of Harper and
Kelsey Brown. Harper totaled 13 points, including a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. The East Mississippi Community College transfer also totaled six rebounds.
Brown drained four 3-pointers for 12 total points in 17 minutes in the win for the Green and Gold.
Wednesday's win was the first season opening win in Belhaven's NCAA Division III era, and the first since the 2014-15, where the Blazers started 5-0.
Belhaven will be facing its second straight opponent from the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) with Rhodes (0-0). The Lynx will open the 2016-17 season in Jackson after an 83-45 exhibition loss to NCAA Division I opponent Lipscomb out of Nashville, Tenn.
Rhodes completed the 2015-16 season at .500 with a 13-13 mark, 7-7 in the SAA.
Head coach Matt Dean begins his 15th season with the Lynx, posting a 225-145 record. Dean is the longest tenured women's basketball head coach in the SAA, and is the all-time winningest coach in women's basketball history for Rhodes College.
The 2016-17 roster for the Lynx includes four upperclassmen on the team's 13-player roster. With their top two leading scorers lost to graduation, Rhodes will look to make up for almost 40 percent of the points lost from a season ago.
Blaire Smith was the third-best scorer from 2015-16, averaging 7.3 points per game, while averaging a team best 3.6 assists per contest. In last season's matchup, the senior recorded seven points, but also dished out five assists.
Bailey Kramer returns leading the Lynx on the glass, averaging 8.6 rebounds per game last season.
The Green and Gold will look for redemption on Saturday, as the Lynx (0-0) defeated the Blazers to open the 2015-16 season in Memphis, 58-53.
Gregory and
Sierra Pittman led the offense in last year's matchup with 16 and 10 points, respectively. The duo went a combined 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
