JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers Football team opens up the 2015 home schedule by welcoming in the defending National Champion University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks. The game is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff at H.T. Newell Field.
The Blazers stand at 0-1 on the season after falling to Millsaps College, 23-52, on the opening Thursday of the season at Harper Davis Field. Wisconsin-Whitewater will be playing in its season opener but is coming off of its sixth national championship in the last eight years.
Saturday's meeting will mark the first-ever game between Belhaven and Wisconsin-Whitewater in any sport. The game is set to be the first of two games agreed upon between the programs, with Belhaven traveling to Wisconsin-Whitewater early in the 2016 season.
The Warhawks are currently riding a 32-game win streak, including a pair of 15-0 National Championship seasons in 2013 and 2014. Over the last eight seasons, Wisconsin-Whitewater has a 75-5 record and six NCAA Division III National Championships.
The Blazers have won three of the last five games against outright non-conference opponents, dating back through the 2013 season. Wisconsin-Whitewater is the second of five non-ASC opponents for Belhaven in 2015, including the first four games of the season.
Belhaven enters Saturday's game with an 8-9 record overall in home openers in the first 17 seasons of the program.
The Blazers have won their last two home openers, a 32-14 win against NCAA Division II opponent Mississippi College last season and a 36-26 win over NAIA opponent Texas College in 2013.
Redshirt freshman quarterback
Clayton Webb set three Belhaven passing records in his debut for the Green and Gold. Webb threw 47 completions, 72 passing attempts, and 525 yards passing in the season opener last Thursday, all records for the Blazers. Webb's 47 completions were nine more than
Brian Ensminger's 38 against Bethel last season. Webb also broke two records previously held by
Conner Preston, who threw for 465 yards and 65 passing attempts against Cumberlands, also last season.
Blazers Wide Receiver
Darien Thomas started 2015 right where he left off the 2014 season, with a pair of touchdown catches in the season opener. Thomas had a pair of touchdown grabs from
Clayton Webb in the first half of Belhaven's game at Millsaps. The two touchdowns, combined with Thomas' 13 touchdown catches last season move the Mobile, Ala. native into a tie for fifth all time on the touchdown receptions list for the Green and Gold in just 12 games.
Blazers defensive back
Alvin Vaughn was right back at making stops for the Blazers defense on Thursday night. Vaughn tied for the team lead with 11 tackles in the game. Vaughn led the Blazers last season with 89 tackles in just nine games, missing two to injury.
Stefon Hayles had a spectacular start to his junior season with a career night at Millsaps. Hayles had career bests for tackles (11) and tackles for a loss (2). The Pace, Florida native had two solo tackles on the night and teamed up for nine other to finish tied with
Alvin Vaughn for the team high in the game. Last season, Hayles finished with 40 tackles in 10 games and two tackles for a loss, meaning Thursday night's tackles for a loss doubled his career total. His career best prior to the opener was nine tackles.
