Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team kicked off the 2014 season with a big win over Louisiana College as freshman
Jessica Mahoney scored four times to lead the Blazers to a 6-0 victory in the bowl.
Mahoney started the scoring in the 36th minute taking a long through ball from
Ashley Harber and then worked clear of the rushing keeper to place a shot from the top of the box in the back of the net.
It was the only goal in the first 45 minutes, but both goal keepers were tested as Belhaven (1-0-0) placed four of nine shots on frame. On the other end, Blazers goalkeeper
Nicole Walsh came up with two crucial saves early on in the first 45 minutes to keep the score at 0 until Mahoney broke the tie.
It didn't take long for the Blazers to get back on the scoresheet when the second half started as Mahoney scored her second of three straight goals in the 47th minute. Ten minutes later, Mahoney completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game.
59 seconds later,
Ashley Harber put herself on the scoresheet and the Blazers up 4-0 after working off a defender and past the keeper to put the shot away from close in on the left wing. The junior finished with a goal and two assists as she also contributed to Belhaven final goal of the day.
In the 62nd minute, Mahoney capped off her four-goal debut with a strike from close in on the right wing. Friday's performance was the first four-goal effort from a Blazer since freshman
Fran Glenny scored four against Talladega College on in the season opener in 2013.
Junior
Laura Quintero capped off the scoring in the game with a delicate strike from far out on the right wing, approximately 35-40 yards from goal.
While the Blazers offense was high powered in the second half, Walsh had to do some work to keep the clean sheet, making two more saves in the second 45 minutes as Louisiana College (0-1-0) fired seven total shots toward Walsh's goal.
For the game, Belhaven outshot LC 21-12 and the Blazers put 14 shots on frame, while LC managed just four. Louisiana College did have a shot go off the right post in the first half.
The Blazers will return to action on Sept. 4 with a game against cross-town foe Mississippi College slated for a 7 p.m. start in the Bowl.
