Tougaloo starting pitcher Rodney McKay (3-6) retired the first 11 Belhaven hitters of the afternoon before
Paul Pickerrell's infield single. The Blazers struggled to solve McKay until the fifth inning, when they scratched across two runs to cut into a 4-0 Bulldog lead. McKay finished his day after 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight eights while walking two and recording one strikeout.
"He has given us fits frequently during his time at Tougaloo, and we struggled early against him today," Head Coach
Hill Denson said. "We hung in long enough to get going and battle back into the game, but they were mighty tough on us for eight innings today."
Belhaven's lineup eventually took the lead in the seventh inning before erupting for a huge eight-run bottom of the eighth. The Blazers managed 13 runs on 13 base hits, with three individuals posting multi-hit ballgames.
Pickerrell and
Josiah Richard each contributed three base hits, while
Emilio DeSilva followed with two more of his own. DeSilva, Richard,
Gabe Wilson,
Tyler Akins, and
Reagan Rutledge each drove in a pair of runs in what turned into a rout of the Bulldogs, though the game was much closer than the scoreboard would indicate.
The Blazers used a different pitcher in every inning, and left hander
Andrew Gunn (3-0) was on the mound at the time the offense took the lead for good to earn the victory.
Will Cockrell and
Ben Allison each allowed a run before
Jim Tom Copeland and
Chris Good each hurled scoreless frames.
Richard Richardson surrendered a pair or runs in the fifth, though both were unearned after two defensive errors behind him.
Rayko Bellmas, Gunn,
Josh Rogers, and
Austin McCann each recorded a scoreless inning, and the Blazers cruised to their second victory in as many days.
Tougaloo's Dustin Porter managed a pair of base hits, including the only one for extra bases for the visiting Bulldogs. Joshua Swords and Jabarii Carr each added an RBI single, while Riki Vasquez and Emmanuel Frias were credited with the team's only other runs driven in.
Belhaven returns to action on Friday to host Bethel University in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4:00 from Smith-Wills Stadium.
"We are going to tweak our rotation a little for this weekend's series, but winning is on our mind," Denson said. "We are going to have to battle, but we are hoping to come away with a series victory."
