Blazer Offense Leads to Win over Millsaps

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team improved to 28-11 on Tuesday with a 10-7 victory over Millsaps College in the Cowboy Maloney Series. The Majors (16-14) still lead the series on the year with a 3-1 record, while the Blazers sit at second place and are now 2-2.

"We were able to punch in a few runs early in the game," Head Coach Hill Denson said. "We haven't been getting big hits at the right time for a couple of weeks, but we were able to do that tonight."

The Blazers used a dozen pitchers in the contest, and junior right hander Jim Tom Copeland's scoreless third proved to be enough for his second victory of the year. Nine pitchers later, Tyler Akins threw one pitch and picked up his 11th save after the Majors brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth.

The Majors pitched six arms of their own, while southpaw Matt Lipman was hit with the loss after allowing a four-run Blazer third. The only two Millsaps hurlers that recorded a scoreless frame were Nathan Harrell and Hunter Johns.

Belhaven shared the wealth offensively, as six Blazer hitters found base hits on the evening and five of those drove in a run. Reagan Rutledge highlighted the effort, as the junior went 3 for 4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.

Tyler Akins and Dominick Francia each contributed a multi-hit game that included a double and an RBI, while Hunter Sutton plated a pair with his lone hit of the game. Emilio DeSilva and Gabe Wilson each lined a single to give the Blazers ten hits for the contest.

The Blazers also took advantage of six hit batters, as the home team swiped five bags in the victory. Rutledge claimed three of those, and the speedster now has 41 for the year, just one shy of his 2013 total.

The Blazers will return to action on Friday, when they host Emmanuel College in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4:00 pm from Smith-Wills Stadium.

"Everybody in our league is tough, and nobody is unbeatable," Denson said. "I hope tonight is the spark that gets us on the right track."
