Spring Hill (22-16, 11-7 SSAC) got on the board with a run in the second inning, but it could have been worse. The Badgers loaded the bases against Blazers starter
Chris Good, but he worked out of trouble and limited the damage to that single tally. Even though Good would only work two innings, getting of the jam in the second proved to be a key turning point in the contest.
Belhaven (27-11, 11-7 SSAC) came to life offensively in the fourth with three runs to grab the lead. The Blazers had been held to one run in 19 innings during the series until that point. Belhaven loaded the bases setting up
Dominick Francia for an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game.
Hunter Sutton followed with an RBI single and then
Gabe Wilson touched home plate when Spring Hill starter Wesley Parrish uncorked a wild pitch to make it 3-1.
The Blazers added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple off the bat of
Paul Pickerrell.
Josiah Richard worked a walk to lead off the frame setting the table for Pickerrell.
The Badgers bounced back with a run in their half of the fifth on a run scoring single from Taylor Eads, cutting the Blazers edge to 4-2. However, Belhaven quickly responded with another run in the top of the seventh, extending the lead back to three runs at 5-2.
Reagan Rutledge singled with one out, picked up his 38th stolen base of the season by swiping second, and scored on a wild pitch by reliever Brady Hitt.
Belhaven used seven different pitchers to keep the Badger hitters off balance, including closer
Tyler Akins who was called upon to fire the final two innings. Akins was up to the task, allowing just one run en route to his 11th save of the season.
David Hill, who pitched the third inning, earned the win in relief to go to 3-0 on the season. Hill gave up just one hit and struck out one batter setting up the Blazers for a three run top of the fourth. Pickerrell and Sutton both had two hits and an RBI each while Rutledge recorded a single, a run scored, and 38th steal of the year.
Parrish (2-6) was tagged with the loss for Spring Hill after permitting four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Eads and Brian Sims had two hits and an RBI for the Badgers at the dish.
Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday night when the team hosts Millsaps College at Smith-Wills Stadium in a Maloney Series battle. First pitch is slated for 6:00 PM.
