Belhaven (26-11, 10-7 SSAC) had the lead just once in the twin bill, striking for a run in the top of the third in game one.
Paul Pickerrell moved
Emilio DeSilva to third base on a single and
Tyler Akins followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, plating DeSilva on the play.
Spring Hill (22-15, 11-6 SSAC) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Eads and then pulled in front in the fifth. Eads had the honors again launching a 3-2 pitch off
Rayko Bellmas over the left field wall for a two run home run. Ryan Stevens added an insurance tally with a solo blast in the sixth, his first of the 2014 season. Badgers starter Jack Howard closed the door on the Blazers in the seventh to preserve the 4-1 win.
Bellmas went all six innings for Belhaven, allowing four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. The loss dropped his record to 4-2 this season.
Reagan Rutledge,
Hunter Sutton, Pickerrell, and Akins each had a hit for the Blazers with Akins claiming the only RBI.
Howard ran his record to 5-2 on the hill for the Badgers thanks to a complete game performance. Howard limited Belhaven to one run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts over the course of seven innings. Eads was 2 for 2 with three runs batted in followed by Brooks Bobinger with two hits and two runs scored.
Game Two
Unfortunately, the bats stayed silent for Belhaven in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Blazers had a chance to make some noise in the first and fifth innings, but left the bases loaded without recording a run each time. Belhaven eventually left 11 runners stranded after all nine frames were recorded.
Meanwhile, the Badgers plated all the runs they would need in the first and third innings. Mykol Sostarich doubled home Eads in the first and then in the third, Eads chased home Brian Sims with a base hit to right field. The Badgers proceeded to load the bases, but were limited to just two runs thanks to a double play ball turned by the Belhaven defense. The second run of the inning and third of the game, touched the plate on that play.
Belhaven starter
Boomer Scarborough pitched two more scoreless innings before the bullpen logged the final three. Spring Hill starter Paul Sullivan recorded six innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Scarborough fell to 4-5 on the season on the bump after allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work.
Gabe Wilson was Belhaven's bright spot at the plate, collecting two of the team's five total hits. Rutledge, Pickerrell, and
Dominick Francia were credited with the other singles.
Sullivan (3-1) earned the win for Spring Hill thanks to his six inning shutout performance. Sullivan permitted four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Keller Douglas pitched the ninth for his sixth save of the season. Sostarich led the Badger bats with three hits and an RBI followed by Eads with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored.
Belhaven will now try and salvage a victory this weekend in the final game of the series.
