Blazers Upended at Millsaps

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team lost for the second time in the 2014 Maloney Series Wednesday by the final of 12-5 at Millsaps College. The Blazers, ranked 8th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, could not overcome an eight run third inning by the Majors.

(Box Score-HTML)
Belhaven (26-9) owned a brief lead thanks to a run in the top off the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Gabe Wilson. The Blazers had a chance to strike for more, but mustered just the one run on three hits in the frame. Belhaven left two stranded, which was a sign for things to come the rest of the night. The Blazers ended the game having left 15 men on base.

Millsaps (13-11) tied the game in the home half of the second before taking control with eight in the third. A three run home run by Keith Shumaker, a three run double by Stephen Gates, and two Belhaven errors fueled the offensive explosion.

Although they wouldn't threaten the rest of the way, the Blazers scored at least one run in each of the last three innings. Hunter Sutton picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice in the seventh while Paul Pickerrell added another RBI on a fielder's choice in the eighth. That same inning, Tyler Akins touched home plate on a balk by Daniel Gallarno and then in the ninth the Blazers tallied their fifth run on an error by second baseman Logan Patterson.

The Majors rounded out the night with two runs on a double by Isaac Glenn in the seventh and picked up their 12th run in the eighth when William Chenoweth scored on a wild pitch.

Will Cockrell (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season for the Blazers Wednesday night, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings in his sixth start of the year. DeSilva, Akins, and Wurster each had two hits for Belhaven to lead the offensive attack. Pickerrell, Sutton, and Wilson had one run batted in each.

Matt Lipman picked up the win in relief for Millsaps by shutting out the Blazers for two innings. Lipman gave up just one hit and did not walk a batter while striking out two out of the pen. Shumaker had three hits and three RBI for the Majors followed by Gates with two hits and three runs batted in. Samuel Doucet went 3 for 4 at the dish and Blake Littlejohn turned in a 2 for 5 effort with one run batted in. The Majors out-slugged Belhaven 15-10.

The Blazers will be back in action Friday night in game one of a three game Southern States Athletic Conference series at Spring Hill College. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 PM.
