"It's nice any time you can get a sweep, but it is huge for us to be able to do that this time of year," Head Coach
Hill Denson said. "I hope this series has jumpstarted our team."
Right hander
Rayko Bellmas took the hill for the Blazers in the afternoon's opener, hurling all seven innings and striking out four Wolfpack hitters. The performance was good enough for Belhaven's second consecutive complete game shutout, while Bellmas improved to 4-1 on the season.
Offensively, the top five in the Blazers lineup each provided a base hit, while cleanup man
Tyler Akins drove in a pair of runs. Outfielder
Dominick Francia was credited with the team's only other run batted in for the first game.
Wolfpack starter Kevin Lindsey pitched six innings, allowing five runs on five hits while walking one and fanning two. The righty was hit with his fourth loss of the season, and the offense's three base hits were unable to provide any run support.
Belhaven turned to southpaw
Chris Good in the series finale, and the 2013 All-American pitched one of his best performances of the year. Good allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out two through five innings before turning things over to the Blazer bullpen.
Ben Allison,
Andrew Gunn,
Josh Rogers, and
Austin McCann each pitched a scoreless frame, keeping Good in line for his fourth win of the season on the mound. Loyola's Joel Buhler was tagged for seven runs on ten hits while walking three and striking out four.
Caleb Bohan and Connor Thurman combined for the final four outs, with the final Blazer crossing the plate in the bottom of the eighth. The Wolfpack offense provided their best outing of the series, as John Nicholson and Garrett Lacour each posted multi-hit ballgames. Peyton Senner and Daniel Pappas were each credited with an RBI.
The Blazer bats again aided the effort of their starting pitcher, as nine different players contributed a base knock for the home nine. Four provided multiple hits, while five drove in at least one run. Belhaven safely swiped four bases to remain near the top of the NAIA leaderboard.
Tyler Akins again paced the Belhaven attack, smacking a double and a home run to take the team lead in each category.
James Peterson and
Hunter Sutton provided a double apiece, while
Tee Payne,
Paul Pickerrell,
Gabe Wilson, and
Josiah Richard each drove in a run.
Belhaven returns action on Tuesday, when they head to Clinton, Mississippi to take on Mississippi College. The Blazers are currently 1-0 on the year in Cowboy Maloney Series contests, and Monday's first pitch is set for 6:00 PM.
"We are starting to heat up, but every week is different," Denson said. "We have to get ready to have another big week like the one we just completed."
