Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Belhaven baseball team (22-7, 7-5 SSAC) fell in the final game of a Southern States Athletic Conference series on Saturday, coming up short at Faulkner University by the final of 4-3. The top ranked Eagles improved to 24-5, including a 9-2 mark in league action.

"We pitched well all day, but we gave them a couple of runs that were the difference," Head Coach Hill Denson said. "Faulkner has a great ballclub, and they just overpowered us."

Belhaven gave the ball to 2013 All-American Chris Good, and the southpaw responded by providing one of his best outings of the year. He allowed nine hits, just three strikeouts and two walks through 4.2, but the Eagles were only able to score three runs.

Ben Allison and Andrew Gunn combined for the next four outs, and the game remained tied until the seventh inning. Austin McCann came in out of the Blazer bullpen, and one hit batter proved to be the difference in the game after Esteban Paula came in to score. Tyler Akins threw a scoreless eighth, but McCann was hit with his first loss of the year.

The Blazer offense chased Eagle starter Jay Gause after he allowed three runs on two hits through the first 3.2 innings. Gause walked seven and fanned six before giving way to Patrick McGrady out of the pen. McGrady held the Blazers in check for the next 2.1 innings, but right hander Kurt Lipscomb was on the mound when Paula came in to score the winning run. Lipscomb improved to 2-1 on the year after holding the Blazers to just one hit over the final three innings of the ballgame, and the NAIA's top team was able to complete their second SSAC sweep.

Offensively, Emilio DeSilva was the spark in the Belhaven lineup, finding two base hits and driving in all three of the team's runs. While seven different Blazers drew a walk, Paul Pickerrell was the only other player to record a hit in the game.

The Eagles were paced by third baseman Edgar Figueroa, who went 2-4 at the plate and drove in a run. Dauris Holguin added the only other RBI for Faulkner, but ten Eagles recorded a tally to the hit column for the afternoon.

Belhaven will return to action on Wednesday, when they host cross-town rival Tougaloo College at Smith-Wills Stadium in non-conference play. First pitch is set for 4:00 pm.

"This conference beats up on each other all year long, but we are going to have make up for this weekend somewhere down the line," Denson said. "We will try to learn from this weekend and see if we can win next week."
