"Boomer's home run was big for us early in the game and set the tone for us offensively," said Belhaven Head Coach
Hill Denson. "Overall, I thought we did a good job swinging the bats and it was good to get a victory."
Belhaven (3-1) got on the board in the home half of the first with the aid of a Tougaloo error. Centerfielder
Reagan Rutledge was hit by a pitch and first baseman
Tyler Akins ripped a single to right center to set the table. With two outs,
Brayden Dykes reached safely on a ground ball to short when Riki Vasquez threw off target at first. Rutledge scored from third to make it a 1-0 game.
Tougaloo (0-1) bounced right back in the second when first baseman Joshua Swords stole home with two outs. Second baseman Dustin Porter took off from first base and drew a throw from Dykes, opening the door for Swords.
The Blazers quickly went back in front with three runs in the third with two hitting the plate on the home run by Scarborough. Rutledge got things rolling in the inning with a run scoring single to right field that chased home left fielder
Dominick Francia.
The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the sixth to make it 4-2, but the Blazers countered with five of their own thanks to four hits in the bottom of the frame. Second baseman
Paul Pickerrell, third baseman
Gabe Wilson, and Francia all had RBI base hits in the inning. The other two runs were recorded on a wild pitch and an error. Belhaven capped the night in the seventh with two more tallies thanks to RBI singles from right fielder
Walt McCullough and Wilson.
Wilson led the Blazers at the plate with a 3 for 5 night that included two runs batted in and two runs scored. Akins and McCullough also turned in multi-hit performances with two hits apiece. Belhaven swiped four bases with Rutledge picking up two of them. He also added a hit, an RBI, and two runs scored.
Ben Allison was credited with the win in relief after tossing two scoreless innings, moving his record to 1-0 on the season.
Porter had three hits and two steals or Tougaloo Wednesday night followed by Swords and Joshua Thomas with two hits each. John Alford (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits with two strikeouts in five innings.
Belhaven will take the field again on Friday for game one of a three game non-conference series against Culver-Stockton at Smith-Wills Stadium.
"Culver-Stockton is a solid ballclub and is very fundamentally sound," added Denson. "We'll have to limit our mistakes and play well to have chance to win the series."
