Blazers Keep Rolling with Win over Spring Hill

Box Score JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven women's basketball team (12-13, 6-9 SSAC) picked up their fourth consecutive SSAC victory after knocking off Spring Hill College (2-13 5-18 SSAC) 70-50 on Thursday night in Rugg Arena. The Blazers avenged a 76-66 January road defeat by ousting the Badgers in impressive fashion.

"This win was divided out tonight," Head Coach Rusty Cram said. " We had contributions from many of our players in this game, and we couldn't ask for much more."

The Blazers started the night with early success in the first half. With early baskets from freshman Candler Gregory and senior Erika LeFlore, the Blazers were clicking on all cylinders at the intermission.

The Blazers collective offensive prowess and defensive presence gave them an impressive 32-16 lead at the half, which they maintained for the rest of the game.

For Badgers, Sha Sha Buchanan was the lone player with double figures in scoring. Buchanan fired in 10 points and collected seven rebounds while Camry Johnson pulled down a team-high eight boards.

"We were able to stop them from doing some of the things they wanted to do tonight," said Cram. "We have turned the corner as a team."

Freshman guard Ariel Wilson led the Blazers offensively once again. Wilson, the NAIA's most recent Player of the Week, tallied 16 points while shooting 42% from the field. Junior TaShayla Steede added in a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while LeFlore snagged a game best 14 rebounds.

The Blazer bench came up big, recording 22 collective points on the night. The home team also added 44 points in the paint and 23 points off the Badgers' 20 turnovers.

"We were able to give our starters some much needed rest, and our bench helped us tremendously," Cram said. "This is the first time we've been able to have this kind of rest, and that will benefit us going forward."

The Blazers will travel to Blue Mountain Saturday in an SSAC showdown. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 PM. The Toppers took game one of the season series on January 25th 60-52 in Rugg Arena. Belhaven's winning streak has put the team right back into the thick of the playoff hunt, trailing Blue Mountain by one game for the fifth playoff spot in the West Division standings.

"We simply need to get back to practice and get ready for a tough team to play on the road," said Cram. "We will get back to practice, and be ready to go on Saturday."
