Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team (2-1) salvaged a series victory after picking up their first two wins of the 2014 season on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from LSU-Alexandria. The Blazers took the first game by a final of 9-5 before hanging on for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. Both the Blazers and the Generals (1-2) entered the series in the receiving votes category in the NAIA Preseason Coaches Poll.

"We wanted to see what we had against a good ballclub, and I thought it was a big thing for us to able to come back with two wins," Belhaven Head Coach
Hill Denson said. "Defense was the difference in the ballgame, and it was a great day for our team."
Blazer All-American junior
Chris Good received the starting nod in Game One, pitching to his first victory of the season. Good lasted five innings while allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Lefthander
Josh Rogers was the first man out of the Belhaven bullpen, tossing one inning where he surrendered a run before turning it over to
Ben Allison. The Illinois junior posted a walk and a strikeout in his lone inning.
Belhaven was aided by a four run fourth inning before chasing starter Pierce Liberta in the fifth. The offense added two runs in each of the next two innings, and no General pitcher was able to complete an inning after Liberta was pulled.
Nine different Blazers provided hits in the opener, while
Reagan Rutledge,
Tyler Akins,
Boomer Scarborough, each contributed a multi-hit ballgame. Catcher
Brayden Dykes provided the biggest offensive spark of the day, going 2-4 with a double and three RBI.
Belhaven turned to Cisco College transfer
Rayko Bellmas on the mound in Game Two. In his Blazer debut, Bellmas pitched into the sixth before allowing his only run. He surrendered three hits and a walk while striking out two.
Andrew Gunn retired the only two batters he faced before
Justin Atkinson and
Josh Rogers each hurled a scoreless inning.
Tyler Akins left his post at first base in the ninth to close things out for the Blazers, recording his first save of the young season. Akins added a pair of hits and an RBI at the plate, while leftfielder
Dominick Francia stroked a pair of hits and infielder
Paul Pickerrell added a triple.
The Generals posted two runs in the ninth off of Akins to cut the lead down to one, but the Blazers were able to hold on to take the game and the series. The Blazers return to action on Tuesday, when they host cross-town rival Tougaloo College. The first pitch is slated for 4:00 pm from Smith-Wills Stadium.
