Blazers Stung by Southern Poly

Box Score MARIETTA, Ga.- The Belhaven women's basketball team fell to 2-4 in Southern States Athletics Conference play, dropping their second contest on a two game road swing. The Blazers are now 7-8 overall on the season after falling to Southern Polytechnic State 63-53 on Saturday afternoon.

Belhaven held the lead only once and that came with just under 10 minutes when Ariel Wilson hit a two point field goal to make it 16-15. Southern Poly (9-4, 5-2 SSAC) recovered and owned a 44-32 edge at the break. Both offenses went cold and the defenses dominated in the second half with the teams combining for just 40 points in the final period.

Freshman Ariel Wilson led with 22 points to pace all scorers on Saturday. Wilson shot 44% from the field and 67% from the three-point line. She also led the team with three assists on the afternoon.

Senior, Erika LeFlore kept up her hot pace as she followed Wilson with 14 points of her own. LeFlore made a game high 55% percent of her shots from the field.

The Blazers shot 46% from the field and 43% from the three-point line and edged the Hornets on the boards 39 to 37. TaShayla Steede was active of the glass for Belhaven reeling in a game high 13 rebounds.

Southern Poly was guided by Sarah Ogoke with 15 points while teammates Alexandria Prince and Erica Turner added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Arnissa Galloway and Prince also grabbed eight rebounds each while Prince dished out a game high six assists.

The Hornets recorded 22 points in the paint and scored 24 points off of Belhaven turnovers.

The Blazers return home to host Dillard University for a non-conference showdown in Rugg Arena on Tuesday night. The tip-off is slated for 5:30 PM.
